Let's talk about Employability before Employment !

Navneet had applied for a consumer engagement position, ideal for her, that she was pretty confident to be chosen for. Her CV perfectly matched the job requirements and academic qualifications, so she was not surprised when called for an interview. She took it as a formality.

However, she was disappointed to not get through to second interview round. When approached the company’s HR for feedback, she was told that although they had found her a great fit for the job going by her subject knowledge, they felt that she seemed non-committal and lacking in enthusiasm and might not be able to engage her Clients well and fulfil the business requirements.

Shocked, Navneet was in dismay, she hadn’t ever given a thought that the interview was about anything but her academic qualifications. It’s not just Navneet but the situation is much bigger. While India’s economy prepares itself to become world’s third largest economy by 2032 surpassing that of France and Britain, about 15 million youngsters enter the workforce each year and not more than 25 per cent are job-ready. This gap between aspirations and skills exists not only because of the lack of dignity of labour in our society, but also because youth do not know what skills they possess. Employability is that set of attributes that makes a person worth employing: how well a person’s academics or technical know-how matches with the Corporate needs.

It is estimated that by 2022, India will need 700 million new skilled workers to meet our economic growth needs. With an aim to train the 1/3rd population of India and employ them by the year 2022, there has to be a strengthened interaction between the world of work and the world of education and training.

Vision India under the partnership of Ministry for Skill Development and NSDC has undertaken an initiative to address the situation by introducing the basics of multi-skilling to the aspiring candidates that exposes them to a wide variety of potential occupations, such as Sales, Retail, BPO, Telecom, Electronics, Electricals etc. and the skills needed for each of these.

Navneet joined the Campus to Corporate program with Vision India at Noida and she began to understand where she lacked, why the interviewers had thought her lacking in enthusiasm. Today, Navneet is employed with the World’s Best Employer Google Inc. as Consumer Engagement Specialist. “It is a dream come true. After completing my academics, I was looking forward to start my career in the Corporate world, but wasn’t able to succeed. “I thank PM Modi for the Skill India initiative that has raised hope for thousands of youth like me to seek employment and be self-sufficient. My gratitude to Vision India for focusing on the life skills as well as soft skills that helped me find an enriching career opportunity.” Says Navneet.

The Skill India initiative of our Honourable PM has been widely working to address the skill gap in India with approximately 70+ schemes for skill development and employment generation run by around 17 ministries towards creating the largest human capital bank in the World.

The skilling programs at Vision India stress the importance of assessing and anticipating rapidly changing skill needs so that they can be addressed through responsive education and training systems. As an organization, a strong synergy among Skilling, Staffing & Rural BPO is our key differentiator complementing each other and create operational synergies – Employability / placement being the core of our Business model. Our sole purpose is to make an impact, touch and transform lives of the underprivileged talented youth in India through gainful employability through various ongoing skill enhancement initiatives.

Excellent work. India needs to identify the skill gaps as it has been reported that many of our technical graduates are unemployable. Education system needs to be revamped and focus should be on outcome-based education.
