Let's talk cybersecurity

Greetings everyone, rightfully so, there is a lot of conversation this week about cyberattacks, cybersecurity and data breaches. Digicel is aware of a recent social media post regarding a data breach that took place in 2021. I want to assure the community that Digicel Trinidad and Tobago was not affected and to date has no known data breaches from the mentioned threat actor.

?We pride ourselves on having the highest levels of cyber threat protection and mitigation management in place for the good of the business and our customers. Our ISO 27001 certification, the international standard focused on information security, is testament to the industry leading management systems and practices that we have in place. This also includes annual mandatory staff security training, as well as raising awareness about cybersecurity threats with our customers and the general public, through training sessions and online content.

?No organisation is immune to cyberattacks, and while Digicel withstands thousands of attempted attacks daily, the vast majority of these are unsuccessful as our systems are proven to be robust and world class. However, attacks like these are on the rise globally, and cyber criminals like RansomExx constantly try to find new ways of attacking and exploiting systems. This includes their use of new, never before seen, malicious software, purposely created to evade modern security protection systems.

?Digicel would like to remind the public that cyber criminals often rely on human error as a way of breaching systems, so it is important that everyone remains vigilant while online and avoid suspicious websites, the dark web and downloading information on your computers from unknown and unsafe sources.

?Digicel has taken a proactive approach in its threat protection and mitigation management, and while attacks cannot be wholly prevented, in the event that a breach does occur, we promise full transparency in informing the relevant parties and providing guidance on steps to take to help safeguard personal data. Digicel does not make payments to criminal organisations like RansomExx and will continue to make every effort to ensure our systems and processes remain robust and secure, in order to stay ahead of these malicious actors and keep our customers and employees safe.

"Digicel would like to remind the public that cyber criminals often rely on human error as a way of breaching systems, so it is important that everyone remains vigilant while online and avoid suspicious websites, the dark web and downloading information on your computers from unknown and unsafe sources." This personal responsibility is important. As a researcher, it provides quite the headache sometimes, but vigilance remains the best defence.

Straight talk Abraham Smith, love it! You can try your best to prevent an attack but transparency is the best way to deal with any problems you face.
