Let’s Talk… Connection This Holiday Season ??

In the busyness of holiday gatherings, did you know a thoughtful question could you?be the spark that turns small talk into something more meaningful??

According to the theory of reciprocal self-disclosure, people naturally mirror each other’s openness. By asking intentional, curious questions, you create space for trust and connection to flourish.?

In fact, research by Dr. Arthur Aron found that asking deep, thoughtful questions can build strong bonds—even between strangers—in as little as 45 minutes.

So, whether you’re sitting around the Christmas table or catching up over holiday drinks, try swapping “How’s work?” with something deeper.?You never know where the conversation might take you. ??

???? Holiday Tip for Better Connection

Start with curious questions in your conversations. ?

A simple, intentional question could?shift your?conversation from small talk to real talk—transforming a fleeting moment into something memorable. ?

Here are some questions to try:

  • What’s the best decision you made this year—and why?
  • If you could relive one moment from this year, what would it be?
  • What surprised you most about yourself in 2024?
  • What’s a goal you’re quietly working on for next year?

Which one could?you try? As you gather with friends, family, or colleagues this season, take the opportunity to connect deeper.

After all, sometimes the greatest gift we can give is our attention.?

“Being heard is so close to being loved that for the average person, they are almost indistinguishable.”David Augsburger

This is an idea that will be useful all year - thanks, Kirryn! The "best decision" one, is probably my favourite. I've also read recently that we should have our own answer prepared as the person is likely to ask us the same thing! ??

I hate nothing more than small talk so I love these suggestions as I'm always looking for ways to getting deeper, faster when connecting with people. I especially like the questions what surprised you about yourself in 2024 and another one I someone asked me the other day is what gave me the most joy in 2024.
