In this issue, we are pleased to launch?two new resources:
We hope these assets are useful. Please feel free to share them with your colleagues.
In this edition, we also provide a short update on our engagement with the value chain and relevant stakeholders in the Americas. This is a testament to our commitment to fostering knowledge of the benefits of BFRs and the importance of fire safety.?
Animation: Protecting Europe Together
Every year Europe witnesses over 5,000 fire-related casualties?
These incidents not only cause loss of life but also leave lasting impacts on families, businesses, and communities. As our world advances, embracing technologies like e-mobility and the Internet of Things (IoT), the need for robust fire safety standards becomes more critical than ever.
Looking ahead to the upcoming EU mandate, we've prepared an animation summarising the three key areas which BSEF believes are integral to ensuring the continued use of BFRs to keep the EU safe from fire:
We work closely with policymakers to embed fire safety practices into social policies related to energy, poverty, and disability. In this respect, BSEF proudly stands among the co-signatory organizations of the?Fire Safety Manifesto for 2024-2029. This manifesto?calls upon European institutions to prioritize fire safety in buildings and develop a consistent strategy with Member States.?
Avoiding double regulation is crucial. It occurs when a substance is regulated by more than one piece of legislation, leading to affected industries suffering from unnecessary burdens for the same issue multiple times. As proud signatories of?the Antwerp Declaration for a European Industrial Deal, we champion evidence-based decision-making that aligns with industrial reality.
To avoid overregulation and ineffective risk management of chemicals, the EU must support risk-based assessments. Unlike hazard-based approaches, which judge substances solely on their inherent properties, risk-based assessments consider actual usage and exposure scenarios. This methodology ensures that essential chemicals are evaluated in the context of their real-world applications, providing a balanced view of their safety and utility, and ensuring their safe use.

Factsheet: Why we need BFRs more than ever
The factsheet "Protecting What Protects Us: Why We Need BFRs More Than Ever" emphasizes the need of BFRs at a time where everyday objects?like electronics but also furniture and insulation materials, are highly flammable.?It highlights the importance of effective legislation in this area, focusing on three key points
Our engagement with the value chain across the globe
While continuing our efforts in Europe, BSEF’s commitment to inform, engage and partner with the value chain across the globe never ceases.
That is why BSEF’s Secretary General Michael Hack, ICL's Director of Global Advocacy Joel Tenney and American Chemistry Council (ACC) Director of Chemical Products and Technology Owen P. Jappen have travelled throughout Brazil and the US during the month of July.
First, they attended the Mobility & Net Zero Brazil 2024 conference in S?o Paulo, emphasizing the vital role of BFRs in enhancing fire safety in E-Mobility. Moving to Brasília, their discussions with industry and government stakeholders highlighted BFRs' importance in Brazil's industrial growth, especially in the Electrical and Electronics (E&E) and transportation sectors. ?
Flying then to the U.S., they engaged with key partners such as Dell, the world's third-largest personal computer vendor, and Lockheed Martin, leading global security, defense and aerospace contractor to discuss the key role of BFRs in their products, circular economy, and relevant European and International chemical regulations. These and other engagements in the Americas and Asia will continue in the months ahead, testifying our commitment to advancing fire safety and promoting the sustainable use of BFRs worldwide.
