Let's Talk.... being uncomfortable

At the start of my recruitment career, a manager told me " Laura you need to get comfortable being uncomfortable." This phrase has always stuck with me and is something I hear myself constantly repeating to myself and those around me.
We all know you have to fail to learn, but for some reason we are afraid of failing. We do not like feeling uncomfortable.
For most (maybe all) people, hard truths are difficult to swallow. I have watched individuals (myself included) wonder around in denial about their own abilities, blaming the world around them for the reason they are not achieving their goals and watched them get defensive when being alerted to the fact that they are simply wrong.
But we need the truth. If you are not feeling uncomfortable regularly...then unfortunately you are not hearing or experiencing anything you haven't already heard or experienced. Problem? You are not growing or learning a thing.
Pushing yourself out of your comfort zone is never easy, but it's an essential part in your growth and development. About a year ago I made a very conscious decision to surround myself with people who made me think, who made me question myself, my approach- everything.
What did I learn? I had a lot to learn.
Did I enjoy hearing this- no. Did I seek out as much criticism as possible- yes. I got comfortable being uncomfortable; allowing me to get further faster.
I would like to say a HUGE thank you to everyone who has ever made me feel uncomfortable (ha you know who you are!) and who continue to challenge me with alternative points of view.
Seriously, hearing the truth (whether you like it or not) is one of the greatest gifts you can be given...it's just up to you what you do with it.
