Let's Start a Convo to End Twitter Automated DMs

The question and discussion of Automated DM (Direct Messages) has been going on for years. Everyone asks, many still do it and some have answered the call.

Now it's my turn.

Having been on Twitter for over 5 years and built a large organic following -- 369,211 followers, with a 92% authentic score, as of June 27, 2016 -- here are some thoughts:

  • Twitter DM automation is exactly like DM (Direct Mail). People do it because they either think they can get some success or they are fine with the numbers game of 0.02% positive reaction.
  • But this also means that the majority of people either don't care for your DM automated message or, more importantly, are annoyed by it.
  • Consider also that in the DM jungle, over 95% of messages are considered spam or are spam
  • Way back in 2011, when I was growing to about 5k followers, I had an automated message. I made it as personable and authentic as was possible. How many solid reactions and follow-ups did I have? ZERO! So I stopped.
  • Imagine networking with someone and the first time you meet them, they ask you to spend time reviewing something, whether relevant or not? How would you feel?
  • DM in Twitter is like text messages, so yes there is a certain intimacy there, but as soon as you spam someone, they will hardly want to DM you again.
  • That said, some amazing REAL conversations can happen if you send an authentic non-auto message via DM with those that want to have the conversation.
  • The best way to engage on twitter is to be real, responsive, accessible and authentic with your thought leadership and how you want to serve your tribe.

So the long answer is above. The short answer is below.

NO. Don't do it. You annoy most people. The ROI is infinitesimal. You do a disservice to your online thought leadership brand.

Agree. It's so impersonal and obvious when they are automated. Great targeting is about knowing your audience not 'batch and blast' messages.

Great post and I couldn't agree more! I instantly stop following them when I receive an auto-DM.

OMG Bobby Umar, I am soooo glad you wrote this post! I really wish that people wouldn't send them, especially with these crazy asks to join them on FB, Instagram and elsewhere... Another issue is that a lot of Twitter "helper" services offer these bot DM's to "grow your influence", so those companies don't help much. The last issue is that when someone really does send an authentic DM, it gets lost in the shuffle of the crap. ARGH! :)
