Let's see...
I remember that around the time I turned 40 my arm became too short for me to focus on whatever I was reading. That’s when I also started turning lights on during the day to help me see better. It is true that as we age we need brighter lights, but it is also true that we become more sensitive to glare. So how do we solve that problem?
When designing the lighting on a project I make extensive use of indirect lighting (reflected lighting) and make sure that the light source (or simply said the bulb) is not exposed. I also use several light sources in any given space for quality and flexibility and those are placed in different locations so that the light does not only comes from above (hi-hats or ceiling lamps) but from different sides of the room to soften the menacing shadows that down lights create on our faces…
Intensity, type of light source, color rendition (or color temperature), dimmability, diffusion, and aesthetics are some of the principles that I take into consideration when selecting light fixtures. I goes way beyond looks... If you want to know more, just ask me.
