Let's Prescribe Art

Let us prescribe ???Art. According to Very Well Mind, Art therapy can help us boost our self-esteem, heal emotionally, soothe or treat certain mental health conditions, and give us a sense of meaning. Some examples may be emotional distress, depression, anxiety, and family conflict. It will not necessarily replace evidence-based methods of treatment like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) or Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) but rather serves as a compliment. As always, consult a trusted professional to see what the best options for you may be.

A 2016 study published in the?Journal of the American Art Therapy Association,?"less than an hour of creative activity can reduce your stress, and have a positive effect on your mental health, regardless of artistic experience or talent."

Art can also help those recovering from trauma, domestic violence, and abuse. The first order of business is to find a safe place if you are in that situation, but once safe, recovery by any means is necessary. Some of us have been triggered by recent events in the entertainment world and are re-living or currently living in domestically unsafe situations. It is no laughing matter and empathize and unfortunately, I have even witnessed it growing up and felt helpless.

I am not the only one. As an adult, you don’t have to stay in such situations to prove your love or loyalty either. ?It is not our fault it happened, but it is our responsibility to heal and address it the best we can. Art and Psychotherapy can be of assistance in these cases, along with spiritual practice and physical exercise.
