Let's normalise the language of summer
Lisa Sullivan

I recently got to take some time off work, a couple of weeks of unplugging and spending time with family and friends. It didn't look *exactly* like the photo above (add a jet lagged toddler and some 'unpredictable' English summer weather for a more realistic mental image), but I did get some time to think about a few things.
One such thing was how the language we use - the actual words we choose - affect and project our relationship with 'vacating.'
Let's start with the out of office.
And then there's the return...
One of the things I read while I was unplugged was this smart piece from Lee Carter at Maslansky, who knows a thing or two about language. She suggests reframing "busy" - which has the unfortunate dual distinction of being both a negative and a badge of honour - to being "full" - a word that can be taken to mean satisfied, content, even grateful.
So I'm going to do just that. I'm not "digging out"; I'm "getting caught up." I'm not "slammed"; I just need a minute to try to get my priorities straight. And I'm not "sorry I missed you"; I'm "so glad we have the chance to catch up now that I'm back."
We need this summer. We deserve this summer. Let's own this summer.

2 年This is so good. Often times I don’t even realize when I let these words slip out. Important to be mindful!

2 年Spot on. All of it. Absolutely essential shifts in language and perspective as you note, Lisa. I've taken to the practice of removing "slammed" and "busy" from my vocabulary and it did more than just change the conversation. I fully endorse every point you make within. Thanks for sharing it all so eloquently. A favorite line within: "The best way to reach me is on my mobile" - Nooooo. Please. Ask. Someone. Else. Even in a client service industry like mine. That's what teams are for. Trust that there are other people that can be of service.... because there are. Yes. Yes. Yes. Breaks are magical.
