Let's take a break from the political world - time to move forward and drive your business or career to new heights! There are elements of victory for everyone; let's close this chapter and write a new one for our businesses and ourselves external of politics. As we consider victory, let's look at some data much like we review and analyze our own business data.
For Biden supporters, Biden received a record number of votes and also led Trump in numbers of inauguration Nielsen viewers. For life long conservatives, Reagan maintained leadership with the record number of inauguration Nielsen viewers in 1981. Reagan also holds the record for the record number of Nielsen viewers to popular votes earned ratio. For Trump supporters, Trump's ratio of Nielsen viewers to his popular vote exceeded both Biden's and Obama's ratio. Using the viewer to popular vote ratio, another possible implication emerges. Noting the blue bars for first (or only) terms of Nixon, Carter, Clinton, Bush (W), Obama, and Trump, the graphic may also indicate expectation or excitement. Looking at the second terms for Nixon, Reagan, Clinton, Bush (W), and Obama the Nielsen audience to popular vote ratio is less than the popular vote percentage. Incidentally, the same information for Bush (HW) and Biden fall into this latter category of lower Nielsen audience to popular vote ratios compared to the percentage of popular vote.
Is this truly an accurate expectation or excitement estimator? Maybe - maybe not. There is no "right" answer just like there is no "right" answer as we initially analyze our business data. What is important is to not accept the data at face value and to look a little deeper. Develop some theories over time; consistently track those theories and then discard those not significantly impacting your business. Good luck and keep your focus on your business!
