Let’s Move 2023 National Day of Racial Healing into Daily Practice

“A settled body enables you to harmonize and connect with other bodies around you, while encouraging those bodies to settle as well...Learning to settle your body and practicing wise and compassionate self-care are not about reducing stress; they’re about increasing your body’s ability to manage stress, as well as about creating more room for your nervous system to find coherence and flow.”

?- Resmaa Menakem

White supremacy comes in the name of destruction.? At its roots, there is fear.? The fear creates individuality, overworking, either/or thinking and other harmful and destructive ways of being that keeps us from creating community.? It keeps us from harmonizing with each other.??

We witnessed a white man that is a mass shooter taken safely into custody.? We also witnessed a Black man seeking help from first responders being gunned down.? Both are trauma responses.

It has been scientifically proven that historical and racial trauma is inherited.? If we have not been in the active work of healing, the historical and racial trauma from our ancestors are present in our bodies.? The work of racial equity must be centered on healing.

Today is the National Day of Racial Healing.? Started in 2017 by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation , it is a day that recognizes that racism has caused intergenerational trauma.? In order for racial equity work to succeed, we must be committed to healing.? It is a basic right.

A daily practice that supports healing is defining how we gather in the workplace.

CommunityBuild Ventures, LLC (CBV) has created Brave Space Building?.? It is a supportive working container that assists community members, representing diverse spectrums, with developing a connection to each other, the work ahead, and themselves. It is a framework for building a container that allows members to “unmask” - show up fully - so they can share experiences authentically, and engage more deeply in conversations that center race, racism, and/or racial equity.? It contains six elements that create a foundation for transformational work:

  • Feelings
  • Gratitude
  • Intentions
  • Community Agreements
  • Assumptions
  • Share Language

At CBV, each time that we gather including with partners we always start with feelings, gratitude, intentions.? Each person answers:

  • How am I feeling?
  • What am I grateful for?
  • What are my intentions?

Through Brave Space Building?,? we have witnessed energetic releases, community members holding space for each other, and frequent reactions about relief in being heard.? It centers humanity and settles our bodies.

Starting with National Day of Racial Healing, we can begin to create community practices to help us to harmonize with each other.? This is how we begin to dislodge, disrupt, and dismantle white supremacy.
