Let's make this Thanksgiving the start of a new tradition!

As Thanksgiving approaches, we look forward to gathering with family and friends, savoring delicious meals, and sharing memorable conversations. However, one conversation that is often avoided is the discussion about money. This silenced dialogue about finances is a detrimental trend, especially among women.

A shocking 61% of women would prefer discussing their mortality over examining their financial matters. This financial silence puts us at risk of losing out on valuable insights from our peers' successes and failures.

This Thanksgiving, let's spark a change and encourage open discussions about our finances. Let's delve into topics like salary expectations, retirement plans, and teaching our children about money management. Starting these conversations paves the way for understanding and better financial decision-making.

The Dangers of Money Silence

  1. The culture of silence around money particularly affects women who face unique financial hurdles. These include the gender wage gap, longer life expectancy, and career breaks for caregiving, resulting in a significant disadvantage in future financial planning.
  2. Money silence hinders our negotiation power for salary increments or fair wages, as disclosures about earnings remain rare. Fear of being seen as boastful or insensitive may prevent us from celebrating financial accomplishments, limiting the learning opportunities from these successes.
  3. Financial well-being is threatened by the stigma around money talk. Hesitation in seeking financial help or advice due to fear of judgement can lead to unaddressed financial crises. Relationships can also suffer due to avoided talks about financial instability.
  4. Achieving financial freedom becomes an uphill task without open money dialogues as it inhibits informed decision-making, saving for retirement, and investment for the future.
