Let’s Make a Sharper Image: Tips for Beet.TV Recordings
Here at Beet.TV, we are producing completely via remote platforms. And it’s great. We can do so much news gathering with so many great peeps via Zoom and Webex.
And we really want to make the segments look good. So, we need your help to improve the image and sound quality. A small investment will go a long way.
Here are some tips:
Mac vs. PC
- If you have a fairly new Mac or iPad, the camera and sound is usually quite suitable.
- If you have a recent Microsoft Surface, the camera is good.
- Most PCs have very basic cameras and mics. The older ones are pretty bad. No need to replace the computer, just attach a webcam via a USB. Many Mac users use a webcam too.
Webcams
There are many and most are priced around or under $100. Most have a microphone too. We have found that the Logitech models are very good. Here’s one on Amazon.
Audio
Even if you have a computer with a good camera, an external mic is very helpful. Airpods or wired earbuds are usually an improvement. (No over the ear headphones please.) While the external mic on the webcam is pretty good, to have the best quality, it’s worth investing in an external mic such as a Blue Yeti for about $130. This will be great for video and podcast interviews. (Beet uses this one.) Another option is a clip-on lavalier mic.
Lighting
Proper lighting is very important. Facing a window or a desk lamp is good. But having a portable light would be very good in illuminating the subject and setting with an even, unified light. Here’s one suggestion for a light kit and here’s another option for a clip-on halo light.
Positioning
For the best looking image, you’ll want your camera to be at eye level so that you’re looking straight ahead, directly into the camera. An easy solution for this is to stack thick books or a box under your computer. Standing desks or computer stands are other good solutions for this.
Internet Connection
Key to a good image is a solid Internet connection. So, a couple of tips: Have your computer close to the WiFi router and, if possible, connect directly via Ethernet. When you Zoom, close your other open tabs on your web browser and other web applications. And try to get your family to hold off streaming and gaming!
