Let's Go To School

Jessica,

The quality of our thinking is proportional to the models in our heads and their usefulness in the situation at hand. The more models you have—the bigger your toolbox—the more likely you are to have the right models to see reality.

When it comes to strengthening our decision-making abilities, it turns out that there are a number of factors to consider. However, the majority of us are specialists. Each specialist sees things differently. A typical Engineer will think in systems by default. A psychologist will think in terms of rewards and punishments. A biologist will think in terms of evolution. By putting these disciplines together in our heads, we can walk around a problem in a three-dimensional way. If we’re only looking at the problem one way, we’ve got a blind spot.

And: Blind spots can kill you.

It'll only be a matter of time before you discover out where your blind spots are, which anchors you use over and over that will cost you time, money, and happiness. The more you look, the more you notice. Spend some time each evening with yourself to reflect on your days, and do it on a daily basis. Make sure you go over everything you've done, including all of your decisions, regrets, and apologies. Make a decision for yourself. Judge yourself based on what you want to become and how you want to live, not others'.

Lions don't concern themselves with opinions of sheeps

That is not easy when you will hear people telling you to do things they want you to do every-single-day. Every single day can be chaos, every single day can feel like being punched in the face. That's okay. That's life. That's how other people operate and/or be operated. It is healthier to focus on opportunities, not problems. (And, it is easier to tell)

Success is mostly the standards you set for yourself.

  • The people you hang around.
  • How you spend your time.
  • The information you consume.
  • The habits you choose.
  • The food you eat.

Most of our standards are inherited by chance nurture: me and Mom, and our environment.

First, at a young age, work closely with a true master. Exceptional people have exceptional standards, and they will undoubtedly?raise yours. This is not an easy process. You probably will not enjoy the contrast from the chance standards you grew up with to the ones you’re now expected to have.

I am not perfect. Mom is not perfect. Your best teacher at school is not without flaws. But remember to constantly look for the good in people around you and respect them fairly. Ask yourself critically long and hard why you want to take on other people's characteristics and if it fits with how you want to live.

Second, if you’re not lucky enough to work with someone firsthand, you can choose what standards you adopt. Adopt the best standards you can find. Learn from the greatest people in history, the best books, the best people on the Internet by choosing the people you hang around and whom you let influence you.

While inherited standards will make you a living, your chosen ones will make you a fortune.

Lower your expectation. Raise your standards.

Integrity over Honesty

Integrity, is, to me, a somewhat stronger word than “honesty.” "Honesty" typically connotes nothing more than telling the truth, whereas "integrity" connotes wholeness, soundness, and profound philosophy of life.

To have integrity is to stand by your word, to have a sense of honor, to do what you have agreed to do, and to do it as best as you can. To have integrity is to be satisfied with nothing less than the best job you can do. In that sense, anyone can have integrity, regardless of how small and unimportant a role you may play in the world.

A person of integrity does not claim to be perfect. Be quick to acknowledge your own mistakes and faults. Do what is right even when it might be inconvenient.

Times of crisis particularly test a person’s integrity. That is when you will find your true friends. That is when you will see clearly who is not. Provide an?example for others to follow. Stand up. At least, for yourself.

Everything is temporary.

Money is temporary. Job is temporary. Your feeling right now is temporary, as well. Get yourself to experience things you love, which you enjoy.

If you have to look for sample questions or answers somewhere else, you may end up doing the same things other people do. Living the same other people's dreams. Getting the same other people's results or making the same mistakes.

Ask yourself. Talking to yourself.

What do you want?

Why?

How?

"Yeah
I know sometimes things may not always make sense to you right now.
But hey, what daddy always tell you?
Straighten up little soldier!
Stiffen up that upper lip
What you crying a
out? You got me!"

That's enough for now. Let's go to school!
