Let's Go Beyond The Facts...Tell Us The Stories!

Want to Know Why I LOVE creating content here on LinkedIn???
Content for me here is not just writing a couple sentences. ?It’s not just posting a picture. It’s not just posting a video. It's not just the data or the facts. It’s the story behind it. ?
Here's why storytelling works so well here. To understand where you're coming from, we need to relate to you. Stories are great for relating because you can either take us behind the scenes to fill in the blanks, or you can use a metaphor where we can better understand why it's so important, and why we need to pay attention. Put the facts into perspective so we can really understand it.
Here's an example.
When talking about the importance of having an optimized LinkedIn profile, I'll tell people that it's like a billboard along the side of a highway. You want people to slow down and notice. You want to get the attention of the masses.
When I talk about the importance of visibility here, I'll use that billboard analogy again and say "What's the point of an optimized billboard if no one sees it?" You have to shake hands and have conversations here so you can be visible to the masses.
Let's get more cars, more traffic on the highway to show off your billboard!
Here's another metaphor I use when teaching people my LinkedIn triangle strategy. When you create content on LinkedIn, you're using your megaphone to earn people's trust here.

That brings us full circle on the importance of telling us stories.
In order to gain that trust, we need to relate to you. We need to understand the importance of the lesson you're teaching us, we can only understand if you are speaking our language.
Relating is what it's all about. People on LinkedIn love to read the stories, absorb the stories and relate to the stories.
Bottom line - tell us the stories! Give us a reason to pay attention to you!
Let's give some shout-outs in the comments, tell us (tag them please) who tells the best stories on LinkedIn!

7 个月Well said! And the best ones are authentic … show the behind the scenes, the raw, the sometimes ugly side of what really happens… without oversharing. All too often lately it feels like story telling for the sake of “look at me” or “life is always so great and rarely tough”. We all know that’s not the case. Laine Belcastro had a PHENOMENAL example of the realness of life with her story telling post the other day in relation to the email marketing workshop she’s hosting on July 18.

7 个月I notice you have GIFs in your newsletter. Mine randomly stopped working last week #annoying Do you use GIFy or some other service? I've always just used the ones that come up after the Emojis - it's windows + : on my computer (don't know what to call it - but it worked on all my previous newsletters). I wasn't sure if LinkedIn was phasing them out or if I was just doing it wrong? I hope I can figure out how to get them back because I think it adds a nice spirit of fun to a newsletter.

7 个月Storytelling is how cultures and communities share learning, teachings, values. It’s as old as time, tried and tested and I absolutely love it! I love knowing about the person I consider buying from, where they come from, how they got here and (the biggie) why they do what they do. Such a great article Deanna Russo. Thank you ?? I’m off to get my creative head on and write some stories.
