Let's Get Visible
10 things I learnt creating a podcast

Let's Get Visible

I adore podcasts. Whenever I'm chatting to a friend or colleague about a topic, you can guarantee at some point I'll say

"There's a podcast about that".

I struggle with my eyesight and after a day at the screen the last thing I want to do is sit at another screen. If I'm not with my family, at the pub with friends or helping at my local Brownies, I'm walking the dog or pottering about my home or garden. When I do that I put my earphones (a clear message to my family to steer clear for a bit) and get lots of doing, whilst listening.

As we approached the finish line of 2023, I decided 2024 was going to be the year I might learn how to start my own. It wasn't a new years resolution, no plan and certainly no budget, more of a 'I'd like to create a podcast' but I probably won't type of thought.

For me 2023 was a year of self reflection, learning (mostly from podcasts & audiobooks) and completing the Bond 7 course with UPFRONT

So I had a word with myself. ACTION is how little Carrie learns. So 47 year old Carrie needs to pull on her big girl pants on, stop overthinking and get going.

No Plan? Learn as you go Carrie

No budget? Find a podcast platform that's free

No content? Rubbish Carrie, you spent the best part of 2023 writing a blog called Invisible Women, use the content you've already the hardest part!

BOOM, no excuses, no hurdles.

So... Here's what I learnt.

  1. My voice isn't as irritating to other people as it sounds to me.
  2. My phone's microphone is 'good enough'.
  3. Spotify have a free app & it's very easy to use
  4. There's plenty of music you can use as background music, all free.
  5. I can create them but I don't have to publish them & I can unpublish them if I change my mind.
  6. Not that many people will listen or notice, but those that like it will subscribe, keep listening and tell you how much it helped them or that they've learnt something. Which is the reason you want to to do it.
  7. Those that don't like it, won't listen again and will forget it ever existed.
  8. Someone else might see you doing it and realise they can too.
  9. And they might create the most amazing podcast ever.
  10. And you Carrie will have a new podcast to listen to.
