Let's get surprised and excited about small things!
The world is inevitably, perpetually, and constantly evolving, even if it may not be noticeable or even significant in the grand scheme of things. As a result, people tend to see history as a series of milestones, each one beginning a new era of society. From the invention of the very first vaccines to the birth of the internet, it is easy to get lost and caught up in the big schemes, the ones that revolutionize and abolish preconceptions of the culture it is born into. However, the more important innovations are usually the small steps leading into uncharted territory. They are the ones which should be celebrated more often.
There is often a very fine line between what is considered ‘small’ and what one may recognize as ‘big’. Much like overcoming a fear, the more one is exposed to larger than life inventions, the further towards that side the line shifts until nothing can be acknowledged as being significant. While this is not something to panic about, it is something to raise eyebrows at as much of the excitement and joy life brings comes from being amazed at tiny miracles and unexpected goodness. If the line moves too far down, a person can be numb to the smaller pleasures and quickly become disillusioned.
As well, if even the most momentous occasions become expected and overdone, curiosity is quashed down and nothing is intriguing anymore. No one will be provoked to seek out their interests or eager to make a mark on the world if they believe everything has already been accomplished. However, baby steps towards a new mind-blowing innovation are meant to intrigue and to engage, broadening horizons and provoking the viewer to explore further by doing some research. Being there from the beginning also gives a sense of accomplishment when the venture does succeed.
Personal sentiment aside, it is simply healthy to embrace accomplishments without taking size into account. After all, successes, no matter how big or small, deserve celebration. Without proper encouragement, there is no way tiny discoveries can ever be fostered to become revolutionary components of the modern world. Every ginormous invention of extreme importance that redirects history started off as a seed of an idea, cultivated through a series of experiments and many failures. As they say, one must learn to walk before learning to run; so if there is no incentive, no encouragement to progress from a steady march, sprinting is an impossible feat.
As one can see, cultivating excitement for smaller milestones is an integral part of making sure society evolves and continues to adapt as needed to the changing times. With all of the innovating and broadcasting of fantastic discoveries right out of fiction novels, it can be all too easy to become desensitized and lack emotion for any new advancements. Consequentially, curiosity is hampered and ignorance is allowed to run rampant. Therefore, it is best to appreciate everything that is a source of fascination, regardless of its magnitude of importance.

9 年Hi Gurdeep. Thanks for your excellent post. More often than not we are caught up in the step change that we must make, the critical project that we must deliver or the breakthrough that we must achieve, that we don’t stop to enjoy the many small triumphs along the way. The journey is often more meaningful than the destination.
