LET'S GET SOCIAL

Last week, my team and I presented a social media class at Distinctive Custom Cabinetry. We had 10 attendees from the construction and design industry, and it was a great lunchtime session.?

What I found so interesting was the desire to learn more about making social media work for everyone’s’ businesses and also how much social media remains a mystery to so many of our clients.?

Preparing for the class, I buried myself in some of the latest thinking around social media success, listening to the gurus on YouTube and the marketing newsletters I follow.?

What remains the same is that social media never remains the same. The ever-changing algorithm is like shooting arrows at a target that is ever moving.?

Most of my clients are building and designing fabulous homes, styling fashionable clients, and getting keys into the hands of new luxury automotive buyers. They don’t wake up in the morning thinking about social media, they wake up thinking about their clients and their core business.?

So, what is a busy business owner to do when they know that social media supports brand awareness and can actually get them new clients??

There are a few options…get up to date and formulate a strategy or find someone who can do that for you.?

Here are a few philosophies to which we hold tight…for now.

  • Be Consistent. If you can post seven days a week, do it. If you can only post three days a week, do that. The algorithm favors consistency: do what you can accomplish on a regular basis as opposed to spiking and slacking on posting.
  • Be Authentic. Post about the real you during your real day. Followers love getting to know you and seeing an inside look at your day.
  • Attention Economy: Keep your followers in mind when you post: it’s all about what’s in it for them.
  • Stop the Scroll. Be provocative in your posting: does this entertain your follower? did it teach them something new? Does it cause them to think in a new way?
  • Engaging Content. Is there a call to action for your post, a question, or a suggestion that can make your posts more engaging and encourage commenting, liking, sharing, and saving.
  • Show Some Love. Social media is about building a community. When someone leaves you a comment, respond as soon as you can (for sure within 24 hours at the very longest). Then go to their page and comment on their posts. The posting is the easy part; the engaging is the part that makes it all work.
