Lets get real with longevity

Lets get real with longevity

6 months? 12 months? Does it still exist? Can it be explained?

?I'm not just talking about junior crew moving around this covers senior crew as well.

Wilsonhalligan Recruitment

I received a CV for review that outlined the following employment history:?

Job 1 - Feb 2019 - Aug 2019

Job 2 - Nov 2019 - Feb 2020

Job 3 - May 2020 - July 2021

Job 4 - Jan 2022 - Sept 2022

Job 5 - Dec 2022 - Sept 2023

?

The individual who sent me this CV explained that the past four years had been incredibly frustrating, and all they wanted was for a stable, long-term position.

?

5 jobs in 4 years, "why have you jumped around so much", I asked...

Her answer:

Job 1 - Yacht Sold

Job 2 - Skeleton Crew

Job 3 - Impact of Covid

Job 4 - Sanctions Russian

Job 5 - Season cancelled

?

What, so none of these moves were because of you?

Not for better compensation

Not due to a terrible culture onboard

Not for career advancement

Not because of poor performance

"No," she replied, "I've simply been plagued by bad luck and all I want now is some stability."

It's really frustrating, in the eyes of an employer I've been designated as a "Job Hopper" and they are skipping over my CV!

Employers, do read this!? Job hopping, gaps, career breaks, etc. are not always as they seem.

Look beyond the surface and you may uncover untapped potential and unwavering determination of crew members who have weathered career storms and are now seeking a stable harbour to anchor their skills and expertise.

Double edged sword... longevity but notice is too long. Short notice but readily available. Never really certain that asking for longevity is great anyway. It sort of rings bells that suggest previous incumbents haven't lasted long and it is being deemed the fault of those employees. Even candidates without longevity will stick rather than twist if they enjoy their role and appreciate their boss.

Longevity after personal choices it’s all about crew recruitment and management. Longevity anywhere has everything to do with the team, leadership and wellness support. Not necessarily in that order after the employee has done their own due diligence. If you’re not asking questions, such as how long has the captain been on board or exactly who are the owners or management company, and what are the ethic and values of the owners? How long has this crew been together or why are you asking for a skeleton crew? How long has the owner owned the yacht? How financially stable is the owner or management? What are your long term short term plans for the boat and what’s your crew turnover to date been like ? If you don’t bother with these types of questions then don’t bother with enjoying life and your career. Working on yachts is one of the most rewarding and challenging jobs if you know what you want going in. Too many crew have little idea of what they really want from a career in yachting, short or long-term and so get what they thank the issue is….. bad luck. Know what your values and goals are in life. Do the work on yourself and life will open doors and opportunities will arrive.

Great and necessary post! Far too many take a CV at face value and don't delve deeper by asking these questions. Investing time into getting to know your candidates and their story is imperative.

Liam Dobbin I 100% support this Liam and I applaud you for bringing it to discussion. ?? Taking the time to find out what is behind a CV is crucial in this incredibly niche industry. Let's not forget that the planet has been so disrupted in the past 3 years or so. More tolerance and understanding of individuals, their situations and circumstances would go a long way to ensure that good people are getting good jobs. ??
