Let's Get Away from these "Sayings"

Let's Get Away from these "Sayings"

Looking at this through the patient's eyes, here are just a few of the "sayings" I would like to work out from the health care discussion:

(1) High Cost Claimant. The patient is not a high cost claimant. The patient is someone that needed a lot of expensive care. The high cost claimant is really the health care system that often charges excessively high prices and claims that you owe them the money!

(2) High Stakes Measures. Referring to quality measures that impact health care provider payments as "high stakes" measures is really insulting to patients. The highest stakes are always held by the patient. They are the ones who suffer, potentially die, and often due to preventable medical mistakes. They have the highest stakes in the transaction period, not the providers.

(3) Patient Compliance. Patients are often blamed for poor outcomes. Sure, I realize that patient's play a significant role in their own health and healthcare outcomes. However, we deserve a system that effectively/successfully prepares and supports patients in taking appropriate personal responsibility.

What are some of your "sayings" would you like to get rid of in the health care discussion?
