Let’s face it, you need to get active –
We all know that staying physically healthy requires attention to certain things like eating well, getting regular checkups, exercise, etc. This same rule applies to the health of our professional lives – if we do not make sure that we are actively involved in maintaining certain areas of our careers, we will not move forward with ease and sometimes, we just won’t move forward.
What I know to be difficult for many of us is to actually make time for the health of our careers. We get into this place where we are so focused on making sure that we are getting it all done, that we forget a main component of success; getting out of our own space.
We don’t make the time for the small things like taking a lunch break for instance, so to actually commit to something like a membership to a professional organization seems like a complete waste of time (let’s not mention waste of money!). Or we actually sign up for the professional organization but never actually engage.
This is what I know to be true – you will get nothing out of doing nothing.
The CFOLC is an organization founded on providing you a safe and helpful environment that offers out more than just a premier networking and educational forum for senior financial executives. Our membership is a collaborative, diverse, and dedicated group who meet to exchange ideas, participate in timely and relevant discussions that include outside industry experts, when needed. We depend on your input to present obstacles or issues as well as share your solutions so that you and other members can benefit. This approach allows for frank and honest discussion and it gives you a place to actually build genuine relationships and come to rely on those relationships right in your local community.
And we don’t want to dilute the purpose of this organization by calling it a networking opportunity – Though we give you the network, there is something about attending a program to stay current with your CPE requirements and then there is another thing called proficiency – I would bet that through your career you got to where you are because you had to be proficient – education is great, but putting it into practice is what lands you the next best gig or keeps you relatively safe in the seat you are currently in.
That is what we have built with the CFO Leadership Council – our goal is to construct panels of experts who can give you something practicable at every meeting – we want to help you remain proficient. And since many times you are the expert, we want you share your knowledge and get involved.
I work out and I am in good shape – why? Because I work out.... Same applies for everyone who is in good shape professionally. You can’t rest on your laurels especially in today’s quick disconnected society.
In my career, I have heard people say things like, I joined the gym (the organization) and got nothing out of it. And my question to those people is, and what did you put into it? Did you utilize it to the utmost? Did you give to the organization those things that you thought were missing?
We want to hear from you about those things you believe the meetings might be missing and then we want you to help us offer them –
Our obligation to ourselves and to others is to receive the fact that sometimes, it is we that need to give what it is that we know is missing. Once we accept this, it is amazing how much more valuable and abundant are our resources.
Let’s face it, in this world which we currently live, it is increasingly easy to get more and more isolated yet the lack of real relationships is what will hold you back in your personal life and in your career.
Be honest with yourself; accept the fact that you need to get involved, you need to invest in the health of your career by engaging and learning from others. You need to allow others to perhaps change your thinking. And you need to have a safe place in which you are able to try out this new way of thinking and doing until you are proficient enough to actually implement it where it matters most.
You need to get involved, you need to do something different and the CFOLC gives you the resources to step out of your comfort zone.
It is good for you and just like exercise, once you start a routine, it doesn’t take long to see the good results that come of it!
