Let's Discuss the Most Critical Issues of Our Time at COP27

I am excited to share KPMG’s program of events at the 27th Conference of the Parties (COP27) in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt. Members of KPMG firms’ global climate team will showcase several new climate-related initiatives and contribute to discussions on key actions which are necessary to help the fight against climate change.

The program will focus on several key themes and KPMG professionals will share any ground-breaking developments during COP27, which may include:

  • The importance of accelerating climate and sustainable energy innovation.
  • The impact of climate transition plans as the UK-based Transition Plan Taskforce launches its framework.
  • The significance of ensuring that a sustainable energy transition is done fairly and equitably.
  • Ways to overcome the challenges of mobilising capital for emerging markets.
  • Ways to engage the next-generation to reflect the youth perspective across the climate agenda.

Net Zero Urban Program

KPMG has developed the Net Zero Urban Program (NZUP) in collaboration with United Cities, which seeks to accelerate the scale and speed at which net zero can be achieved in urban environments. This new program aims to reach 10,000 cities, scale up 100 solutions and raise US$25bn of capital by 2030 — focusing on the five high climate impact industries: buildings and infrastructure, energy, mobility, waste and water.

The NZUP will highlight how digital twin technology can simulate scalable city solutions based on facts to, in turn, help implement decarbonisation strategies. To complement this, KPMG has developed a new concept called the Decarbonisation Innovation Exchange which will be used as a digital platform to help attract the providers of technology solutions and financial investors to address the problems identified using the digital twin technology.

At COP27, there will be two sessions with United Cities, to launch this initiative and invite broader participation to form a ‘coalition of the willing’ to determine how to develop a framework for the future. On Finance Day, there will be a one-hour session in the Blue Zone to introduce NZUP. On Decarbonisation Day, there will be an extended session on NZUP in the Climate Action Innovation Zone.

Alliance for Just Energy Transformation

KPMG is supporting the UN Development Programme (UNDP) and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) in the development of the Alliance for Just Energy Transformation (A-JET). This voluntary initiative aims to share understanding and catalyse transformative action toward the successful implementation of just transition policies worldwide, even as the details of the transitions differ across each jurisdiction.

A-JET seeks to work toward co-creating and implementing a collective just energy transformation action plan. A-JET will be launched on Energy Day at the UNDP Pavilion in the Blue Zone. The objective is to establish the initiative and set up a work program for the year ahead. During the launch, the founding members will be invited to pledge commitment to the broad A-JET principles.

If your organization is interested in taking a more active role in helping to deliver the action plan, and becoming a signatory to the founding principles, please connect with the team to get involved.

Climate Finance and Resilience

As part of an ongoing collaboration with the Global Resilience Partnership and the sponsorship of the Global Resilience Hub at COP27, KPMG is bringing global and regional experience into several sessions and initiatives on the theme of climate finance during the first week of COP. There are two events that you are invited to attend in person or virtually.

Greater accountability by public and private providers of climate finance is critical to ensuring transformative amounts of climate finance are mobilized for emerging markets. There are, however, a range of interpretations of what accountability means and approaches to accountability; it is, therefore, necessary to unpack these understandings to identify opportunities and gaps for enhancing accountability for promoting locally-led adaptation. KPMG professionals will bring insights on accountability as it relates to climate finance in this session.

The clean energy transition has the potential to not only lower emissions but strengthens resilience in the face of climate change and future market shocks. Financing sustainable energy poses pressing equity and access challenges — particularly for low-income and developing countries.

KPMG perspectives on COP27

COP 26 was the launch of GFANZ, and over the year has grown from 450 members & 130trn AUM to 550 firms & 150trn AUM. Alongside regulations set over the period by the UK FCA, US SEC, and EU's EFRAG, the intentions are clear. But COP27 is about turning intent into implementation. And one of the key catalysts of implementation will be the launch of Transition Plan guidance at COP27 – firing the starting gun for corporate transformation to deliver net zero in a nature positive and just way.

Join the webcast on 11 November to hear the latest developments from COP27, notably the Transition Plan Taskforce's 'gold standard' Disclosure Framework and GFANZ's finalized financial institution transition planning guidance. Panelists will discuss how these announcements fit into the evolving climate strategy and reporting landscape and examine what it means for business.
