Let’s Create A Goal For Our Organisation!

Let’s Create A Goal For Our Organisation!

Let’s climb Mount Everest. Do you know how to do it? Maybe, some of you have an idea but for most of you, this will sound very crazy. But when we start the journey towards it, we can become better and will achieve the goal sooner or later. Similarly, if big goals are set for a company it can become amazing and visionary.

One purpose, one vision that everyone in your team is yearning to achieve. Something that is big enough to be thought of as crazy. If you have read my previous post, you will know what I am talking about. If you have not, I am talking about BHAG.

BHAG or Big, Hairy, Audacious Goal is a long-term (10-25 years) plan that you feel you will never achieve.

Why Is BHAG Important For Your Business?

A BHAG not only allows companies to think out of the box but also, think big and be a visionary. Do you think you have your big, audacious goal? Is it daunting enough? Will we ever be able to achieve it?

If our goal is not daunting enough and you think it is somewhat achievable, we need to get back to our drawing board. We need to think again and this time, something bigger.

NASA photographed a black hole. Is that a Big, Hairy, Audacious Goal? Researchers have been working on it from around the world. Half a ton of hard drives were filled in to store the available astronomical data. But then finally, the Event Horizon Telescope Team on April 10th, 2019, displayed the first-ever image of a black hole to the world. It brought a lot of information to the industry and served as a game-changer.

And, this is what a BHAG is.

How To Create Your Own BHAG?

Most people think too small to create their BHAG. Creating an audacious goal requires a lot of thinking. We need to identify all the goals that are worth pursuing. If you are an apparels brand and thinking of landing on Pluto definitely is big and audacious but is it worth it?

  1. We need to aim at something that is relevant and would take more than 10 years to come true.
  2. The goal we create must be action-oriented. Something which cannot take care of itself.
  3. Make your BHAG measurable. If your goal has a? number that symbolizes progress, it will induce memorability and compelling-ness to it.
  4. A good goal is something that can be explained in two sentences maximum. Something which is not dull. For example, Amazon says, “Our vision is to be earth’s most customer-centric company; to build a place where people can come to find and discover anything they might want to buy online.”

You can connect the goal with the story of your company, something that has happened in the past and the present.

Once you have your BHAG statement, you must test it. Tell it to your friends and analyze the emotional response it triggers. Get to know how memorable it is. This way you can make your vision statement better.

Conclusion

A good BHAG can orient the workings of an organization. It has the ability to engage and inspire people. Do you have a BHAG? If not, let’s plan on creating one.
