Check the difference between SAM & SMV !
There are various views to show the difference between SAM & SMV. Among them three main thoughts are...
First thought: Both are same things !
Second thought: SAM is the extension of SMV with allowances. And
Third thought: SAM and SMV are totally different factor each other.
All the work study books said about only “Standard Time” rather than SAM or SMV. But in some Practical American Published Books SAM is appeared while in European published books SMV. As a result, Asian Industries which are influenced by the European consultants use the term SMV, while South American industries which are influenced by American consultants use SAM. In this respect we can say both are same.
Second thought is, SAM is the extension of SMV (though it is not seen in any text book but from the idea of some experienced experts & consultants). According to their views SAM is SMV but with added allowances or SAM is the addition result of SMV & allowances. They equalize the term SMV with Basic time which is without allowances.
Third thought is (though it is not really applied in apparel industry), SAM & SMV are totally different things. SAM is time related term while SMV is cost related. Standard Allowed Minute is the time in minute of a specific task or process which is obtained by time study or using PMTS. On the other hand Standard Minute Value is the value of standard minute that means the “Cost Factor” in cost value of a single minute which is used to multiply with SAM to get the cost of the task or process.
So, it is not mandatory to make debate on the differences. The main thing is that we can call the terms according to its application. But I think the term SAM is best!

6 年Thank you for solving SAM terminology. Is not the management point of Time & Action (T & A) more economical than the need for SAM in the clothing sector? Think about it. This is because Sewing time is 36%, except cutting time is 11%, it manages T & A more than 50% of total time and synchronizes with production time. Is not this an efficient innovation? I think ...! What do you think?
