Let's Build Workplace User Experience
When we think about tomorrow workplace we really should think about user experience. For too long workplace has been about the customer i.e. CRE or even the CFO! During the pandemic, the CFO agenda can again be heard loudly:
If people want to work from home, let them fix their own work spaces!
Driving costs down aggressively is the best way to split the workplace and disengage people from working at the office. When you add poor leadership and traditional management to that, no wonder people prefer working from home.
But we're not discussing pros and cons of remote work here. The looming remote work boom is not about technology nor the office being broken, it’s about management adding negative value to people’s work. The root of the problem is that the office is associated with poor management (meetings, noise, interruptions...) and non-existent leadership. Somewhere along developing new office concepts we forgot to take ownership of the workday experience and people's ability to manage their work productivity (=well-being).
For us who believe in the fundamental transformation of work and the consumerisation of workplace as a result, the customer and user experiences are integrated. Customers must understand users and the difference in productivity between engaged and disengaged workers. Yes, the new world of work is virtual and distributed, but precisely for that reason the value of workplace experience increases. Flexible work demands that you have a great office experience in your employee experience design kit.
