Let’s All Choose to Challenge
You may have heard of International Women’s Day before, or seen it on your timelines but not understood what it actually is.
Well, to be blunt - it's a day to celebrate us amazing women.
This day for us women is a global day, recognised around the world as a time to celebrate the economic, cultural, social and political achievements of women. Gender equality has gone on for many generations, this day has been put in place in the hope to end discrimination and improve equality.
International Women’s Day isn’t just to celebrate our achievements though, it’s also one of the most important days of the year to:
- Raise awareness about women’s equality
- Fundraise for female-focused charities
- Network and build relationships with like-minded women
- Protest for accelerated gender parity.
Throughout the years, we’ve achieved a lot as women. We’re powerful - why not celebrate this?
This day has been significant for over a century, with the first gathering happening in 1911. Gloria Steinem, renowned feminist journalist and activist previously explained:
"The story of women's struggle for equality belongs to no single feminist, nor to any one organization, but to the collective efforts of all who care about human rights."
International Women’s Day isn't a day to preach or is it a day to protest against men - but it's your day, and you should do what you can to truly make a positive difference for women.
Is it still relevant?
Yes, yes, yes! A thousand times over. There’s always been the concern of gender parity, and it has been proven it will not be attained for almost a century - so sadly we won’t be around to see it. However, we’re improving the future for future women.
We can all play a part in others' futures.
Did you know on average, women still earn 24% less than men do worldwide? The wage pay gap is far the worst in South Asia - where this percentage increases to 33%.
It isn’t all doom and gloom though - there has been some positive outcomes in the parity over the last year. FTSE and Fortune 500 boards have aimed to ensure that over 30% of leadership roles are held by women - which they are on the way to achieving and I’m sure this number will increase over the years.
Choose To Challenge
Each year this prominent day has a different theme, with something different to celebrate together alongside the points listed above. The campaign this year is ‘Choose To Challenge.’
A challenged world is an alert world, and from challenge comes change. 2020-2021 has been a tricky year for us all, but the challenge has encouraged us all to change and redefine our goals.
