Pounding hearts & shaky hands may present themselves.
We get it. You’re scared to speak publicly. It makes you nervous, makes you sweat and you worry you’re going to say the wrong thing.
Yup. That is probably going to happen.
Either that, or like me, you just observe your audience, prepare your notes and speak as you were designed to do.
That sounded far too simplified, didn’t it? The reality is, at least in my experience, a little preparation goes a long way. Even if you’re not presenting in your native language, you know how to speak, smile and read a room. You’ve been doing it most of your life.
However, without a doubt, we could all use a refresher on the best ways to improve our preparations in advance of our next speaking engagement.
Try to remember, the speech is about them, not you.
- Know your audience.
- Organize your material in advance.
- Grab their attention in the first 30 seconds.
- Practice & Prepare.
While you’re up there, try to remember, this moment means waaaay more to YOU than it does to them… so, chill out.
- Watch for Feedback and Adapt to it.
- Use Effective Language with your Storytelling.
- Use humour, even if you’re not all that funny.
- Use your voice and hands effectively.
Plus, consider matching the bookends of your presentation for a more impactful conclusion.
And above all else, let your personality shine. Whether you’re speaking for 30 seconds or 30 minutes, the same guidelines apply. When it comes to public speaking, preparing in advance goes a long way.
Not only do your preparations lead to a better presentation, they also have the ability to stimulate your creativity in advance to get you even more engaged in your message. That kind of energy is difficult to fake.
With a little advance prep, you’ll ease your nerves and everyone will see you being yourself. That’s all the public wants...
To hear you speak.
