Let your mind play and wander.
This is a story about coincidence by the Russian writer Nabokov:
Once a Russian captain sailed the oceans. One evening he stood on the deck of his ship and played with his diamond ring. The ring slipped out of his fingers and although he tried to grab it, it fell into the sea. Exacly twenty years later he was eating a large fish in a restaurant in Moscow. When he cut the fish with his knife he did NOT find his diamond ring.
Taking a not obvious turn in a story is great way the discover how one thinks. What do we expect? How do we automatically fill in the way we think the coming events will occur? And how do we see and experience the world around us.
In 1882 Vincent van Gogh made a painting called 'Meisje in het bos' (Girl in a wood) He made the painting sitting on his knees. In a letter to his brother Theo he explained that he wanted to create a moment where the public was sucked up into the picture. Where the public was becoming part of what happened. Later scientists found parts of oak leaves on the bottom of the painting because it was painted at such a low perspective.
Every day we create a world the way we want it to be. Not because we are the slaves of things to happen but because we are the masters that shape our future.
And it all begins with having fun and letting our minds play and wander. It defines us and makes us a successful species.
