Let us hear your words

Let us hear your words

As entrepreneurs, our ability to communicate is critical and a highly valued talent.

It is a skill that has to be nurtured, trained and continually developed if we want to ensure that we optimise our abilities to support our company's progression.

I was reminded of this fact this week as I attended the IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) General Meeting and Conference delivered by a superb team from 英国标准协会 .

This week-long event gathered over 1,000 individuals from across the world engaged in the development of the standards that define our world, keep us safe and provide the framework for innovation.

But this is not my usual community hence I had to focus on communicating clearly, listening carefully to understand where I could add value and ensuring any message I shared was constructed in a way that all could understand.

We communicate across a myriad of platforms today and I've shared a little below about the need to embrace public speaking, to learn to love video and to ensure our message is free from technical jargon.

During the week I was privileged to participate in a panel on Smart Cities in my role as lead for The Scottish GovTech Cluster and provide the keynote on a day-long debate focused on the journey to Net Zero - my experience with Net Zero Nation was invaluable here.

Appearing on the stage can be daunting for many but I enjoy the experience. I discovered that if I share from the heart, and focus on how I could best add value to the audience then my nerves evaporate.

Don't miss these opportunities

1. KISS

Learning how to simplify a message takes a huge effort but will deliver incredible returns. Check out this article where I share some hints & tips on how to do this.

2. The Power of Video

This image of a graveyard high above the city of Stirling is interesting but not eye-catching. Now check out the video and you will see this story come to life.

I know that many of you will be hesitant about recording video, but as our world embraces this media I urge you to "give it a go". You really have nothing to lose.

3. Why you must ascend the stage

With the Web Summit about to Kick off in Lisbon attracting some 70,000 young entrepreneurs, I am reminded of the benefits I secured by accepting the invitation to climb up onto the stage.

LinkedIn Hints & Tips

How often do you "post" on Linkedin?

I have got into the habit of doing this every workday and it has proved a real game changer for me.

I can honestly say that 90% of the incoming opportunities I receive are through my activity on Linkedin.

It's not enough to simply have a profile on Linkedin, to really gain the full benefits of the platform you need to be active.

When I deliver training on Linkedin the usual response I receive from those not posting is "I have nothing of interest to say" but in my opinion this is rubbish.

Each of us is an expert in our own chosen field, we have spent years becoming experts and it is this expertise, if shared, which will add value to others.

Why not try to write one post a week? Write something that you feel will be of interest to me, tag me in the post - @russell dalgleish - and let's see how many others find value in what you gift the universe.

Also by tagging me that guarantees you at least one comment, surely a good start :)

The Week Ahead

I start this week in Copenhagen discussing #GovTech for a couple of days and the later part of the week will be split between Edinburgh and Glasgow. Drop me a DM if you are around and would like to meet.

How can you help?

  1. Please leave a comment sharing your feedback, insight or thoughts on what you have read. This is invaluable as I ensure this publication is adding value for you.
  2. Share this newsletter with those in your community if you feel they will find value in receiving a copy: https://www.dhirubhai.net/build-relation/newsletter-follow?entityUrn=7169668571235606528
  3. Don't hesitate to DM, or email me at [email protected] if you believe I may be able to assist you in moving your business forward. Helping others is my goal in life and I always have time to talk.

Absolutely right on all three counts, Russell Dalgleish. Great tips. It took me a while to get the confidence to do video clips, but, like you said, if we cut the technical jargon and Eurospeak / acronyms it works well. Just being ourselves, and observing conscientiously and faithfully what's going on around us is important. I am pleasantly surprised that some people really want to know what I think on topics I haven't addressed, in some cases, for decades.
