Let them respect your work, not position

Let them respect your work, not position

Let them respect your work, not position.

Time and again you will come across something similar. The question is, Does it really matter? I would say, yes it does. This quote is not only for those sitting higher up in the hierarchy, this is indeed for all of us. Those who are sitting above you, were you few years back. So, you should understand this now so that no one else will suffer later, like you. If you can then make those sitting above realize this.

I used the word suffer because I really wanted to. Software industry has changed big time in last 5 years or so but people have not change with it. There weapons have changed, though. Most of the times I see people using their position to force their timelines, decisions, faults etc. on the team. Agile is being used as a weapon to enforce illogical timelines, just to be praised by higher management that you got the work done so fast.

Result:

  • Highly skilled and logical members will quit - Respect them!!! You need them.
  • Quality of product will be compromised - We know that, not we?
  • Company eventually will be in loss or less profit - Analyze this.

A team work for a leader. A leader, leads from the front. If there is a storm he is the first one to be hit by it. He does not crumble under the pressure. He understands the situation, takes wise decisions, asks suggestion, motivates team, encourages collaboration, creates a healthy environment, give credit does not steal it, want to be treated as a friend and not SIR and above all he never thinks he is leading or managing he just act as another team member but with just little more responsibility and experience.

Do not be a leader or a manager just be a team player. They will actually respect you. They will work for you and with you. Quality will actually be higher. They will come up with new ideas just to lend you a helping hand. They will actually earn you praises from those sitting higher up. Speak up for them, that is your job. Your job is not be a "YES MAN". Though, at times you will have to understand the situation and act accordingly, believe me your team will understand you and will slog just for you.

 Part 2 of series

Very true !!! Great thought.... Unfortunately very few people in the industry realize this.
