In Scrum, the Team steers the ship.
The job of the Scrum Master is NOT to tell everyone how to steer the ship. It’s to keep the ship on course, removing icebergs from the path.
Our team made a big decision last night. We shifted our sprint from 2 to 3 weeks. It’s the first time we’ve done this, but we realized that our user stories and the structure of the month (three weeks of school / work, then two weeks of vacation) required something a bit different. We’re taking on our largest backlog of user stories ever.
Honestly, as the Scrum Master (and Mom!) this sprint feels a bit daunting.
I take solace in the process. Our daily scrum. Our burndown chart. And mostly in the idea of failure as learning.
It might seem silly when you look at our user stories. What does failure look like? We don’t have thousands of customers using our software. Generally, if we miss our user stories, we can move them to a future sprint without much impact. But doing this sprint over sprint ends up having a tremendous impact. Not completing our user stories means not connecting and that’s a fail. We’re building family.
