“Let social media run amok.”
That’s how I decided to open my TED Talk.
“TED Talks aren’t what they were.” Some time ago, as I was prepping my own TED Talk, a friend of mine passed that judgment over TED — and I agreed. Over the past decade, TED Talks have evolved into refined stories and neatly packaged answers. As an audience, there’s a feeling of being on the receiving end of wisdom gained after the mountain has been climbed, or once the book has been written.
And frankly, that sort of talk doesn’t interest me. Because I know that watching it will be like eating the scraps left over from a banquet.
I don’t think we want answers. We want questions. We don’t want thought leadership. We want to quest together.
We want an invitation to conversation and co-discovery.
And so I gave a TED Talk about not knowing. About being at the beginning of an important journey. Not having the answer. But yes, having the question. (And if you feel energized or interested by this question, then let’s explore it together.)
The question I ask in my talk is: What if the problem in the social media age is not the lies, but our truths?
Think about it. Imagine we could wave a magic wand and delete all lies from social media. What would we be left with? A society even more divided by the belief that truth is a weapon, which some people monopolize and others must suffer under.
Regulating lies — yes, that’s a big, immediate problem. Resurrecting truth — stronger truths, together — that's our generational task.
You’re welcome to join me in this conversation. So far, I’ve opened three pathways. One way is conversations, which I’m hosting for social + traditional media companies, politicians, policy makers, educators and students — for any groups who are struggling with the collapse of truth and the wildfire of #fakenews. A second, more public pathway is in-person, citizen truth-building, which I’m testing out in collaboration with public libraries and other civic spaces. I’m also convening an intimate gathering of 15-20 individuals in tech, media, science, religion, academia and philosophy, tentatively set for Spain in June 2020.
The paths are different. The destination is the same: stronger truths, together.
Pick a path. Get in touch. It’d be great to have your company on the journey.

5 年Another thought, give the answer and try to work out the question, reverse engineering, it might be an interesting exercise.

5 年Making a journey with fellow travellers to seek out answers is good, firstly though you need to clarify what you are looking for and then come up with your concept of ops, strategy, questions to discover. This is normal, well at least for those who plan. I do like the idea and I love conceptulising about things, a novel idea to think of really interesting questions and follow where ever they lead, I like that. I always say to people never ask the question if you do not want to hear the answer. Thank you for sharing.
