Let it Rain | Health Tips for Transitioning to the Monsoon ?
Dear Readers,
It's my favourite season! The time for the rains! But also a time when people fall ill easily and the number of accidents increases. We pay too much attention to our moods and very little to our bodies and in this post, I want to share light and insights on how you can better prepare your health and immunity for this new season!
ICYM the last post: Read Destressing the Mind | Inflammation & Mental Health over here.
This period of transition from dry to wet weather can bring about changes in our bodies, making us susceptible to infections and imbalances. Here's what you can do:
Boost your immunity
Incorporate probiotic-rich foods like yogurt, kefir, and fermented vegetables to strengthen your gut health, which is crucial for a strong immune system. Consume foods high in antioxidants, such as berries, nuts, and green leafy vegetables, to combat oxidative stress and support immune function. Include anti-inflammatory spices like turmeric and ginger in your diet to reduce inflammation and boost your immune response.
Hydrate well
According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, drink herbal teas like ginseng and astragalus to strengthen your Qi (vital energy) and support your immune system. In general, ensure you drink enough water and consider adding electrolyte-rich beverages like coconut water to prevent dehydration, especially in the humid monsoon.
Traditional practices
Increase your intake of vitamin C and zinc through supplements or foods like citrus fruits, bell peppers to enhance your immune defense, at the same time, opt for warm, cooked foods over raw foods. Soups, stews, and broths can help support digestion and nourish the body during the cooler monsoon season.
It is best to reduce dampness in the body by consuming foods like barley, corn, and lentils. Avoid overly greasy or cold foods.
Bonus tip: Stimulate acupressure points like ST36 (Stomach 36) and SP6 (Spleen 6) to boost digestion and strengthen the immune system.
According to Ayurveda
One must consume a diet that pacifies both Vata and Pitta doshas which includes warm, moist, and slightly oily foods to balance Vata and cooling foods to soothe Pitta as per the body's requirement. Use herbs like tulsi (holy basil) and neem to purify the blood and boost immunity. Tulsi can be taken as tea, while neem can be consumed in powder or capsule form. Digestive spices like cumin, coriander, and fennel in your meals to aid digestion and prevent digestive issues common during the monsoon. Remember to follow a daily routine that includes oil pulling with sesame oil, abhyanga (oil massage), and regular pranayama (breathing exercises) to maintain overall health and balance!
