Let it pour! Build a new basis for offshore wind

Local supply chain development and jobs? Check. Solving potential steel supply challenges? Check. A concrete-engineering partner? Got it.

Aker Solutions has bolstered its offering to offshore wind developers in the UK with a new end-to-end solution for floating and gravity-based concrete turbine foundations. Together with leading international infrastructure group, Balfour Beatty, the company is now sizing up wind projects suitable for concrete foundation designs.

Concrete offers a speedy way to construct multiple turbine foundations, making them an effective and easy-to-maintain engineered option for offshore wind developers. Concrete pours and turbine builds can be completed close to offshore wind farms and — in the case of floating wind — the entire turbine build and tow-out can be handled at quayside.

“Concrete has a long design life, and the foundations can be reused. They can be fatigue-tested for harsh conditions and incur lower operational and maintenance costs,” said Jason Brown, SVP of Renewables UK at Aker Solutions.

“Aker Solutions is seeing significant interest in fixed and floating offshore wind concrete foundations as an alternative to steel foundations. Customers know we delivered the marine concrete engineering wonders Brent B, Troll B and Hebron amongst others.

“We have successfully transferred this expertise to engineer and build the world’s largest floating offshore wind farm, the 88 MW Hywind Tampen.”

Aker Solutions’ offering to the offshore wind industry now includes turnkey consultancy, a suit of wind-to-grid solutions, fixed and floating foundations, cables, connectors and marine operations.

Perhaps soon we can store the CO2 from the concrete production!

The south west coast of the UK is one area where offshore wind has not yet been developed. It's deeper waters require floating turbines & offshore HVDC substations. The opportunity is tremendous. The strongest and most consistent winds blow in from the SW off the Atlantic. It could be a real game changer in the UK's ongoing transition to increased renewable energy generation.

I love concrete! ?? ?? Started my career in J?tt?v?gen in Norwegian Contractors in the early 90`s, when I was a student, building condeeps in concrete! Glad to see that huge concrete-constructions are still hot and alive, also in the future energysystem! ??
