You’ve probably heard the analogy before…. that coaching is just like turning a lump of carbon/coal into a diamond? But, the thing is – it’s true.
Many coaches make use of metaphors to describe what coaching is and is not. Turning rough executives in diamond is one of the most used ones. Why? because, a diamond is nothing but a clump of carbon, which under right circumstances, develops into a precious jewel. The official process of manufacturing a diamond consists of various steps that include planning, shaping, applying friction, polishing, and inspecting, all of which can help coaches shape their coaches into beautiful solid resilient leader and human being.
Coaches turn themselves into a motivating and supportive guide to explore options with, someone who points out a potential new path and then lets you decide on the way to go. Before you know it, you’re discovering new directions and your shine begins to attract all the positivity in the world.
Coach differs from a consultant who tells you how to get in shape, which edges to work on and which aspects require more sharpening and then leaves you on your own. In addition, a therapist explains why it is important for your self-esteem or psyche, to be successful. A Mentor shares with you their experience or expertise and advises the most effective way they’ve found to reach success.
A coach listens to your desire to shine.
The coach will ask you why you want to shine, what would be possible for you then, what is, even more, deeper for you etc. The coach stands with you patiently, through the polishing process, by asking questions and offering support and guidance rather than giving orders and making judgments. He would check on you to see if you’re enjoying the experience and ask you what might make it more fun. He would listen to you as if he is listening to god, he will try to understand you as if he is trying to make sense of the universe.
The coach might ask about your experience and what was valuable, and whether or not you want to pursue polishing yourself further. If you do, the coach helps devise a plan where you can attain that desired impact. If you don’t, then the coach may help you devise a plan to help you achieve what is important for you even at a deeper level.
Nobel Prize winning scientist ‘Ilya Prigogine’ who studied the phenomenon of the evolution of diamonds, observed that, with the right amount of pressure into the subjects, with the required amount of energy, something spectacular happens. They don’t fall-apart; neither do they blow up; or end in chaos. Instead, the subjects will reorder itself, and will evolve into a more complex structure.
We can do the same thing with ourselves by using the pressure and chaos of our lives let it flow into a higher level. We often see our depressions, anger, limiting beliefs, unwanted emotions, conflicts, frustrations, anxieties and stress, keep us away from being something important, something spectacular.
Albert Einstein, once said, "You cannot solve a problem from the same consciousness that created it. You must learn to see the world anew." In other words, you cannot create your new life with the same mindset that created the life you have now. Wayne Dyer, an internationally renowned author and speaker in the field of self-development, so aptly states, "When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at will change."
A right coach makes you change the way you look at things. Within you, right now there are all the raw materials required for you to recreate yourself into an extraordinary diamond. You can choose to be in peace and happiness, if you let go of fear and struggle. You must choose to become spectacular — a real diamond.
So here is your work. Find a coach (which can be me J), who will help you to find some way to remove your stuck emotions. By imaginatively letting the pressure and stress in your life to break through to the other side, you will be able to reorder your life and you will shine. As someone wise once said, "What doesn't kill me will make me stronger" — like a diamond.

3 年Nicely written, Vikram. Especially like the point on how you cannot solve a problem from the same state of consciousness that created it. Powerful.
I like the metaphor of a diamond...the more you chisel and cut and polish, the more ot shines!
