Can I help you to discover where a huge amount of your working time is disappearing?
If you don't have enough hours in the day to complete all the things you want to this could be a revelation.
Some of you might already know all about this, but for some this will be a huge revelation and help you find hours each week to either finish work earlier or put to more profitable use.
Did you know that your phone is a productivity monitoring tool? Let's take a look at screen time and what it can reveal.
My iPhone screen time shows a daily average of 6hours and 5 minutes and it's down 6% from last week. I used to average 8hours 30 mins a day. So now I've saved almost 10 hours a week!
What would you do with an extra 10 hours a week?
If you click to see all activity, it then breaks down where you spend your time, on the different apps, like LinkedIn, Safari, Email etc. So you can easily see where you are spending your time and if its in the right areas.
Over the last two weeks I've been working on reducing my daily email time which was 45 mins a day, now down to 26mins a day.
(On an iPhone, find screen time in settings, on Android, it is in Digital Wellbeing.)
Let's take this a step further.
Do you remember sitting near someone at work who constantly interrupted you? You had loads to do and they constantly interrupt you? Or maybe you've worked from home when young kids are around and you were constantly interrupted.
Each time you're interrupted it takes you a few minutes to get back into the flow of what you were doing, lets assume this is 2 minutes each time (experts believe it's much more) this could be a lot of unproductive time each day.

Just scroll further down on screen time and you'll see pickups - this shows average number of times you pick you phone up each day. Mine was over 300 when I first looked and now it's down to 129, and 21% down on last week.
It also shows you the first apps you use after picking up... maybe another opportunity to save some time if you are constantly distracted by the wrong things.
Scroll a little further and you'll find notifications - wow this was huge for me.
I have turned off a LOT of notifications, I just don't need them and it's so easy to do.
Removing all these distractions has been huge for me, I've become a lot more productive over the last few months. I get through my work faster and I have shaved hours out of my working week...
My phone is always on silent, I've turned off vibrate and haptics (the other little vibrations), I've set my phone to sound/ring if my nearest and dearest call me another secret feature for my VIPs.
I'm back to working a 4 day week now as a result of this and some other productivity gains and automation of a lot of manual activities. I've improved the quality of the work I complete and get it done much quicker as a result.
Imagine what you could achieve by saving a lot of time and distraction?

1 年Excellent piece Jamie. Something else that saps valuable time is when you're fighting or firefighting with IT that won't do as it's told ??. Fortunately, there are businesses like InfraZen Ltd that can help you get that time back ??
