The second thing we have to do to adapt, change or shift our leadership successfully is to:
Value Yesterday but Live in Today.
My dad said a profound statement a couple times to me; yesterday ended last night.
That resonated with me particularly if I had a tough day, which I did about 15 years ago.
I was trying to get my medical group to buy into my vision of expanding the outpatient offices, but they rejected it. (My approach was lacking but that is another story)
I decided to lick my wounds and so I was sitting in the kitchen alone and sulking.
It was a pity party for the ages. I could have gotten a Grammy award for the performance I was putting on. In fact, I think I was proud of how sorry I felt for myself and the few others that saw the vision.
Then dad enters. He said one of the greatest things about my situation was that yesterday ended last night.
I'm telling you, it woke me up to the reality that we can reflect for 24 hours and then we move on.
In other words, we value yesterday in triumph or in failure, but we value what we learn so we can build on it today.
We value yesterday, but we live in today and deal with some of the changes and adaptations that we are going to have to make.
Don’t lament that you used to think and act like a ladder climber, or perhaps you still do. I want you to be thankful that you climbed that ladder, or that you are ‘changing’ from one rung to the next, so that you now have the competence to build a ladder for someone else.
In other words, don't make yesterday’s immaturity a stumbling block to today's, successes. Yes, you were immature yesterday. Get over it.
You are better today because you learned, unlearned and relearned. That’s great because yesterday ended last night.
Yesterday, only serves as a launching pad to today's success. Reflect on the past but let go of yesterday and live in to today.
People may think well of you for yesterdays accomplishments, but they will follow and respect you for today's actions and tomorrows vision.
