Let the battle of the winter viruses commence!

January is upon us. Gone are the overindulgent days and constant social invites, along with our waistlines and our immune system. The hangover of December is slowly ebbing away, making way for the peak of the winter blues, leaving ample room for us to contract the plethora of bugs going around. Between the tram and your workplace, it can often feel like you constantly have to take cover from the siege of sniffs and coughs that surround you, before you finally triumphantly barricade yourself in your office and crank up the thermostat.
There are other, slightly less dramatic ways to consider to ensure that you keep yourself fit, healthy, and bug-free this winter.
Dry your hands well after cleaning
There isn’t one of us reading this article that hasn’t had “wash your hands” instilled in us from a very young age. We’ve all see the passive aggressive “how-to” charts that helpfully demonstrate the best way to wash our hands thoroughly. But do we do it? If you are furiously nodding yes, congratulations, you are one of the 5% of people that do. Isn’t that remarkable? And disgusting. And also a surefire way to get someone else's infection. One of the things we don’t do enough is drying our hands properly. Wet hands are just as dangerous as dirty hands as they pick up all the nasties, so no more giving them a quick wipe on your thigh on the way out the door.
Sneeze into your elbow, not your hands
On the same note as washing correctly, how many times have you sneezed into your hands and then done...anything afterwards except disinfect your fingers? Everything that just came out of your sneeze is now on your face, on your keyboard, on your phone, in your hair, on your desk...Now look at everyone else in the room, did you shake their hand today? Elbow, not hands.
Stay healthy
I know. After a month of festive delights, those green things look boring, but a healthy diet is crucial to optimal health and keeping those bed-bounding illnesses at bay. Your gut is almost entirely responsible for your overall health, and there is not much you cannot improve through your diet. It’s time to pack those naughty eating habits in for another 11 months. It really is simple: fix your gut, fix your health.
As well as these manageable steps, making sure you get enough sleep is vital to keep your stress levels low and your immune system is firing on all cylinders.
