Lest We Forget
As we recognize Remembrance Day and Veterans Day in what has been an unusual year, I’m reminded more than ever of the importance of everyday gestures of support and kindness as a way to pay tribute to those who fought to protect our freedoms.
Our bank’s archives hold many stories about stepping up and giving back in difficult times – often through small but meaningful gestures. In one story from 1940, members of our bank created The Canadian Bank of Commerce War Guild, who came together to knit socks, scarves and prepare other small gifts which were sent to those on the frontlines in time for Christmas that year. In its first year, this small group sent over 1,200 articles to those fighting in the war effort.
80 years later amidst a global pandemic, I saw our CIBC team and communities sew, 3D print, and donate masks to a different kind of frontline hero, a reminder that our genuinely caring culture transcends generations.
Every act of kindness that supports others and strengthens our communities is a small tribute to those who fought to protect our freedoms, and those who serve today to preserve peace.
On behalf of our bank, I want to express my deepest gratitude to those who served and remember the many who made the ultimate sacrifice. To those who serve today or have a family member in the armed forces, you have our thanks.
We must remember those who served, and importantly – we can all act in a way that honours and builds their legacy.
