Lest We Forget : The Fall of Singapore on 15th February 1942

As we solemnly commemorate the 83rd anniversary of Singapore's fall on 15th February 1942, we are reminded of the profound lessons from our history. The swift capitulation of our island during World War II underscores the imperative of self-reliance in national defence. The reliance on external powers, exemplified by the British colonial administration's failure to safeguard our homeland, serves as a poignant lesson that our nation's security must rest firmly in our own hands.

Approaching our 60th National Day on 9th August 2025, we honor the visionary leadership of our founding fathers and the indomitable spirit of early immigrants. Their collective efforts transformed Singapore from a modest, marshy settlement into a vibrant, first-world metropolis. Under the stewardship of leaders like the late Mr. Lee Kuan Yew, Singapore evolved from a resource-scarce British colony into a prosperous nation with a robust economy.

Today, Singapore stands as a testament to resilience and strategic foresight. Our nation is recognized globally, not only for its formidable military capabilities but also for its significant economic prowess. Singapore's strategic investments in defence have established it as a formidable force, deterring potential aggressors. Moreover, our proactive role in international humanitarian efforts, particularly in response to natural disasters, reflects our commitment to global solidarity and assistance.

Central to our nation's enduring security is the comprehensive framework of Total Defence, encompassing six pivotal pillars: Military, Civil, Economic, Social, Digital, and Psychological Defence. This multifaceted strategy ensures a holistic approach to safeguarding our sovereignty.

Military Defence: A robust and well-equipped Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) serves as a deterrent against potential threats, ensuring our nation's sovereignty remains inviolate.

Civil Defence: Empowering citizens with the knowledge and skills to respond effectively during crises fosters a resilient society capable of swift recovery.

Economic Defence: Building a resilient and adaptable economy ensures that Singapore can withstand global economic fluctuations and emerge stronger from adversities.

Social Defence: Nurturing harmony among our diverse racial and religious communities fortifies the social fabric that binds our nation.

Digital Defence: In an era where cyber threats are pervasive, safeguarding our digital infrastructure and promoting cyber hygiene are paramount.

Psychological Defence: Instilling a deep sense of national identity and commitment ensures that Singaporeans remain steadfast in the face of challenges.

As we navigate the complexities of the modern world, the principles of good governance remain our compass. Upholding integrity, transparency, and accountability in leadership is essential for sustaining public trust. It is through such governance that we can secure a prosperous future for our children and position Singapore to thrive in the evolving global landscape.

Majulah Singapura!
