The Golden 13 was a group of African-American men who became the first African-Americans to be commissioned as officers in the United States Navy during World War II. In early 1944, the Navy established a training program for black enlisted personnel who would be evaluated for officer candidate school. This program was conducted at Camp Robert Smalls in Illinois.? Thirteen enlisted men were chosen to participate in the program. They came from diverse backgrounds and were selected based on their qualifications, aptitude, and leadership potential.? The training was intense, and the candidates faced both physical and intellectual challenges. They studied navigation, gunnery, naval regulations, and military tactics.? Despite the challenges, all thirteen candidates successfully completed the program and were commissioned as ensigns on March 17, 1944.
