Lessons of A Spare Room Tycoon

Looking to establish a professional consulting practice?

This year marks the 40th anniversary of my solo consulting practice. Over the years, I have collaborated with over a hundred corporations, privately held firms, and executives. In the year 2000, I published a book titled Spare Room Tycoon: Succeeding Independently, The 70 Lessons of Sane Self-Employment. The following are some of them.

.????? Identify your strengths and design your business around them.

.????? Forget who you used to be.

.????? Selling is like breathing: Stop and your business dies.

.????? You are promoting your business, not yourself.

.????? Small customers have money too.

.????? When people want you, they will find a reason to value you.

.????? Stay true to what makes you unique.

.????? Most people dress to belong. We dress to bill.

.????? Do not pretend to be something you are not.

.? If you want people to help you, do not see them as targets.

.? Being known as someone people can depend on is the best promotion of all.

.? Charge enough to live. If you do not, you will not have a business.

.? Other people’s anxieties are what keep us in business.

.? Every business needs to evolve, but not every business needs to expand.

.? You cannot make a plant grow by pulling on it.

.? It is not your overhead, but what is in your head that counts.

.? You do not need to change your size to change the world.

.? We want freedom and independence. Building an empire is optional.

James Chan I read your book over a decade ago and found it not only inspiring, but a source of deep and broad insights and concrete tools. Thank you! And glad to see you're posting about it after all these years.
