Network

Entrepreneurial Journey - Networking the right way.

Throughout my entrepreneurial journey, mentorship was more than just a responsibility; it was a burning passion that propelled me forward. As I guided aspiring advisors and navigated the realms of networking and sales, one principle always stood out: the power of genuine community engagement.

I often encouraged my mentees to immerse themselves in community involvement, but not merely for the sake of building connections. No, it had to be something they truly believed in, something that ignited their inner fire. For those with children involved in sports, I had a special recommendation: become their coach.

Whether it was soccer, basketball, or baseball, the sport itself took a backseat to the valuable lessons we could impart. As a coach, my focus extended beyond winning games; it encompassed nurturing individual skills and fostering character development. It was during these coaching sessions that I unearthed a remarkable opportunity to instill wisdom beyond the confines of the field.

At the conclusion of each practice, I introduced what I fondly called "wisdom sessions." These were brief yet impactful discussions tailored to the specific age group I was coaching. We would gather around, and the players would take turns reading sections aloud. This not only reinforced the lessons learned but also fostered open discussions and engaging Q&A sessions.

The impact of these sessions extended far beyond the boundaries of the sports field. They exemplified values such as preparation, care, and integrity. Parents admired the holistic approach, and many of them became not just clients but lifelong friends. It was never about networking; it was always about forging genuine connections and making a positive impact.

Interestingly, some of my mentees from different industries eventually became clients as well. Ironically, as they grew in their abilities, character, and wisdom, they started to have a profound impact on me, teaching me valuable tips and lessons. It doesn't get any better than that.

In mentoring sessions, I emphasized this ethos. Don't network for transactions; engage authentically, pour your heart into what you love, and let the connections grow organically. It's not just about winning clients; it's about building meaningful relationships and leaving a lasting impact.

Trent Family Tales – The Monsters

An unexpected opportunity to connect and build relationships arose when the local YMCA approached me to coach my daughter Avery's 6-year-old soccer team. This was back in 2000, a bustling time in my business where networking and building meaningful connections were paramount.

Initially, I hesitated. Soccer wasn't my forte, and my schedule was already filled with numerous commitments. However, the YMCA persisted, emphasizing the significance of having a dedicated coach. The thought of contributing positively to Avery's team and fostering relationships with the parents and players intrigued me. So, I decided to dive in and carve out time in my busy schedule.

?Our team comprised eight 6-year-old girls, a diverse group brought together by chance. Armed with soccer manuals and advice from friends, I assumed the role of coach. Our practices focused not just on soccer skills but also on teamwork, sportsmanship, and building lasting relationships.

During our practices, we implemented creative techniques like using basketball goggles to encourage the girls to keep their heads up while dribbling. We practiced passing, shooting, and emphasized playing with determination and humility, instilling values that extended beyond the soccer field.

As the season progressed, the team bonded deeply, nicknaming themselves "The Monsters" to amplify their camaraderie. Each player received playful nicknames like Bruiser Berry, Turbo twins, Little Engine, and Rooster, adding a fun element to our shared experience.

What began as a commitment for one season flourished into four, spanning two years of fall and spring seasons. The Monsters evolved into a formidable team, undefeated throughout all four seasons, and radiated joy both during games and off the field.

Reflecting on those seasons, I'm immensely grateful for the networking opportunities and relationships that blossomed. Interacting with parents, fellow coaches, and witnessing the growth of the young players not only enriched Avery's experience but also mine. Even today, encountering those young ladies, now in their late 20s, brings back cherished memories and reaffirms the power of networking and building relationships, both professionally and personally.

Wisdom – Ziglar/Rohn on Networking

Zig Ziglar and Jim Rohn are two of my favorite authors. They believed that genuine networking is not about transactions but about building meaningful relationships and adding value to others' lives.

Zig Ziglar often spoke about the principle of "You can have everything in life you want if you will just help enough other people get what they want." This philosophy emphasizes the importance of approaching networking with a mindset of service and generosity. Ziglar believed that by genuinely helping others achieve their goals and solve their problems, one naturally attracts opportunities and success.

Similarly, Jim Rohn emphasized the concept of reciprocity in networking. He encouraged individuals to focus on giving without expecting immediate returns, knowing that generosity and goodwill create a positive cycle of abundance. Rohn believed that networking with a giving attitude not only strengthens relationships but also opens doors to new opportunities and collaborations.

Both Ziglar and Rohn emphasized the quality of connections over quantity. They believed in nurturing authentic relationships based on trust, mutual respect, and genuine care. By being generous with their time, knowledge, and resources, they inspired others to do the same, creating a network of like-minded individuals committed to mutual growth and success.

Furthermore, Ziglar and Rohn highlighted the importance of integrity and authenticity in networking. They encouraged individuals to stay true to their values, be sincere in their interactions, and always deliver on promises. By focusing on how we can contribute to others' success and well-being, we create a positive ripple effect that benefits everyone involved, leading to long-term prosperity and fulfillment.

Trent Takeaways

Strive for quality connections over quantity.

Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success.

I still remember those wisdom sessions Coach! One that has always stuck in my head is that we can only control our attitude and effort. It's served me greatly all these years. Those years of mentoring are still impacting my life in a positive way. Appreciate you!
