Lessons Learnt

Initially, I viewed completing an undergraduate degree as a pathway to securing a job in the future. However, I now realize that college was more than just earning a degree. It was a profound journey of self-discovery, forging meaningful friendships, and overcoming challenges that once seemed insurmountable. Through moments of uncertainty and triumph, each experience has played a significant role in shaping the person I am today.

Here are a few things I learnt during my journey:

  1. Time Management: Learning time management in college highlights the fleeting nature of time and the importance of discipline. Each moment is precious and should be savored. Prioritizing tasks and staying present maximizes opportunities and shapes our journey meaningfully.
  2. Taking Chances: College is ideal for embracing risks. Taking chances opens doors to new opportunities and fosters personal growth. Exploring diverse subjects reveals hidden passions. Both successes and failures build resilience and confidence, proving that even small risks yield rewarding outcomes.
  3. Financial Stability: Prioritizing financial stability in college lays a foundation for the future. Creating and sticking to a budget supports academic success and sets the stage for long-term security and independence.
  4. Reflection: Positive procrastination has proven beneficial through reflection. It fosters personal development, revealing strengths, weaknesses, and areas for improvement. Celebrating small wins enhances motivation toward larger goals.
  5. Setting Boundaries: Overcoming people-pleasing involves learning to say "yes" to aligned opportunities and "no" to unnecessary commitments. Setting boundaries managed time effectively, allowing focus on academic and personal growth without overwhelm. It's about understanding what I can control and releasing what hinders my growth. By setting boundaries and prioritizing mental health, I ensure continuous self-improvement, evolving personally and academically.
  6. Confidence and Learning: Believing in my knowledge consistently led to positive outcomes in exams and beyond. Throughout college, confidence and effective communication skills were crucial. They empowered me to articulate ideas, participate actively, and build meaningful connections with professors, peers, and mentors, enhancing collaboration and networking opportunities.
  7. Continuous Growth: Embracing lifelong learning was crucial in college. Our principal emphasized relearning and unlearning, which resonated deeply. Remaining a perpetual learner kept me adaptable and engaged. Engaging with diverse perspectives enriched my experience, broadening my outlook and improving interpersonal skills, preparing me to collaborate effectively across cultures and viewpoints.
  8. Critical Thinking: Developing critical thinking skills in college was pivotal for my success. It enabled rigorous analysis of information, evaluation of arguments, swift decision-making, and effective differentiation between reliable information and misinformation. Integrating common sense helped me approach situations pragmatically, making decisions aligned with my goals and values. Adaptability further strengthened this foundation, ensuring I navigated challenges with flexibility and resilience.
  9. Networking as Investment: Engaging with professors, peers, and professionals expanded my influence and provided valuable career insights in college. It fostered mentorship, job referrals, and collaborative opportunities, while creating a supportive community for idea exchange and knowledge sharing.
  10. Empowerment through Independence: Embracing independence allowed me to chart my own path, make decisions shaping my academic and personal journey, and take ownership of my future. It cultivated initiative, prompting exploration of new experiences and learning from both successes and setbacks.
  11. Doubts and Learning: Don't hesitate to ask questions in lectures; addressing doubts immediately is crucial. Remember: "He who asks a question remains a fool for five minutes; he who does not ask remains a fool forever." It's also essential not to rely solely on faculty as the sole resource; exploring multiple resources enhances learning and understanding.
  12. Academic and Professional Success: Throughout our academic journey, we often prioritize grades as proof of our efforts and understanding. However, it's the knowledge acquired, skills developed, and experiences cherished that truly shape our future. Similarly, in the professional world, financial success can overshadow the importance of a fulfilling career. Just as grades don't fully reflect intellectual growth, money alone doesn't ensure a rewarding career. True success involves lifelong learning and making meaningful contributions beyond mere marks and financial gains.
  13. Image Consciousness: In college, image consciousness often dominates as students strive to fit in and project a certain image. Social media, peer pressure, and cultural expectations amplify this focus on appearance and reputation. As we transition from college, it's crucial to recognize that while managing our image can have benefits, genuine success and fulfillment come from authenticity, personal growth, and meaningful connections. Let's prioritize staying true to ourselves and our values over superficial appearances as we navigate our future paths.
  14. Humility is Essential: No matter how talented, smart, or socially adept we think we are, there will always be others more advanced in these areas. Embracing humility enables us to learn from others, appreciate diverse strengths, and foster continuous growth. True personal development comes from acknowledging our limitations and recognizing the valuable contributions of those around us.
  15. Hard Work Beats Talent: Consistent effort and dedication are often the keys to success, surpassing natural ability alone. Moreover, serving as a catalyst in others' lives magnifies this impact. By supporting and inspiring those around us, we create a ripple effect of growth and achievement. Combining hard work with a commitment to uplifting others not only propels individual advancement but also enriches our community, fostering a culture of mutual progress and success.

From learning the importance of time management and taking calculated risks to prioritizing financial stability and embracing continuous learning, each experience has shaped me into the person I am today. As I move forward, I carry with me the lessons of humility, the power of hard work, and the value of building meaningful connections. These principles not only guide my professional aspirations but also underscore my commitment to lifelong learning and personal development. I look forward to applying these insights in my career, contributing meaningfully to my field, and continuing to grow both personally and professionally.
