Lessons Learned in London

Did you know we once had a UK office? Allow me to share some hard learned lessons…

First, Toronto is not the centre of the Financial Industry. No surprise but even when recruiting for clients in the UK, their scope and scale essentially neutralizes any regional focus or expertise that a career in Canada might generate. Even a successful mining banker had a tough time moving from the pond to the lake. Second, again not surprising, the extent of product in the UK dwarfs that in Canada. This is an important consideration for those looking to return to Canada someday. As an example, there really isn’t much of a market in Canada for an FX trader focused on middle eastern currency.

Lastly, the size of the Canadian market can work to an extreme advantage if you maintain good networks. The "6 degrees of Kevin Bacon" game is much easier to play here then there. If they don't know you, your work better be stellar and you absolutely must back that up with examples.

To the Roads Ahead...

I am a born and bred Canadian. Three years ago I picked up and moved to London. Yes, It is like moving from a pond to a lake (in my case, from Quebec, it is like moving from a puddle to the ocean). I am back in Canada now. Not sure if I made the right call.
