Lessons Learned in Life

-Recovery Must Come First So That Everything You Love In Life Doesn't Have To Come Last-
I started off at 20 socially drinking, which quickly turned into daily drinking. I was also a nurse at the time and injured my back, so I was given Vicodin. Eventually because my back was not getting any better, I was given Oxycontin. This caused my drinking to increase even more as well as increasing my opioid use.
?
As a result of using Oxycontin and drinking (even on the job) I lost my nursing license, and I was arrested for taking some Oxy’s that were going to be thrown away. As a result, I got divorced and my children stayed with their father, and I did not see them as much and our relationship was effected. I also had difficulty getting any decent job because of my record.
?
I stopped using opioids shortly after I was arrested, and I still drank for another 10 years. Finally with help from my dad and stepmom, I realized I was sick and tired of being sick and tired. I went to treatment in New Hampshire and then to AA. I had a great sponsor who helped me go through the 12 steps. I did service work and testimonials. I moved to Florida to be closer to my mom and sister and realized that I wanted to work in recovery to help others. I started off at ARS as an alumni coordinator and was then given the opportunity to get my certification as a peer support specialist. Recovery means to me that I am finally self-sufficient, pay my bills and have my own apartment. I can be a mom, daughter and sister who is present. I can also give back what was freely given to me and help others reach their goal of recovery as a peer support specialist.
