I never thought I would say that I walked 1400 miles in 8 months! That is CRAZY!
I had toyed with the idea of walking the year in miles for 3 years but mentally I thought it was impossible.
It was not until a dear friend of mine did it twice that I decided to GO FOR IT!
So this year in January I just started walking. I have learned so much! I will share 6 things I have learned so far.
- Walking shoes need to be replaced about every 400 miles. I had read somewhere that shoes last about 400 miles but did not experience the TRUENESS of this statement until I started walking so much. Sure enough I have replaced my shoes 3 times already!
- TIME is an Illusion. I found time I did not know I had..... THIS one is the most peculiar one. I really believed I did not have time to do this. It takes quite a bit of time to walk 6-7 miles but somehow I keep finding time.
- PLANNING, PLANNING, and more PLANNING. Planning helps with efficiency so I can have more time to do what matters. As soon as walking became a priority it became necessary to plan each day and week to ensure all family/work/personal items got taken care of.... YOU know what?... not only have I had enough time but I got good at saying no to things that don't matter and being more efficient with time and resources.
- TELLING EVERYONE what I am doing is powerful accountability. Everyone in my life knows what I am up to... My family, neighbors, students, co-workers, friends, and even strangers. THEY all know and they ask me about it all the time! There is no way I can quit with that many people asking me about it.
- WHAT I DO MATTERS. I keep finding out that people have started walking more because of what I am doing. I guess this makes sense, since I am walking because a friend inspired me through her actions. I am humbled daily that what I do or don't do affects what others do. THIS IS POWERFUL- OUR ACTIONS MATTER.
- NATURE HEALS. Since I started walking I am finding walking is therapeutic. It helps me problem solve, rest mentally, cope and manage stress, and helps me do better in all areas of my life.
I could write a WHOLE book on what I have learned from this experience. Maybe I will someday. For now I will keep on walking I have 600 more miles to go.
I hope this has inspired you to either move more or do something you have been thinking about doing.
I am Rooting for YOUR Success!!
