Lessons Learned from Navigating the Launch of a COVID-19 Rapid Self-Test

Reflecting on the journey of helping? bring a COVID-19 rapid test to market, I encountered a myriad of challenges that tested not only our technical capabilities but also our resilience and adaptability as a team. I am forever changed and grateful for the experiences. I have the utmost respect and admiration for everyone I worked and interacted with. At times it was emotionally draining and felt daunting.? We laughed, cried and fought together. Looking back, it was amazing to have been able to be a part of it.?

Here's a glimpse into some of the hurdles we faced and the invaluable lessons they taught me.

Navigating Unfamiliar Territories

Our project brought together stakeholders from diverse backgrounds—each with their own expertise and limitations. From a client accustomed to internal enterprise software to a competing consulting firm whose expertise was solely in bringing MVPs to market, bridging the gap between different perspectives, expertise and business interests was a monumental task that required patience, empathy, and a deep understanding of our shared goals.

Overcoming Resistance

Resistance often accompanies change, and I experienced firsthand the challenges of navigating skepticism and opposition from within and outside the team. From PMs who viewed me as a threat to their authority to consulting firms wary of disrupting their established practices, building trust and fostering collaboration amidst adversity became imperative to our success.

Embracing Regulatory Chaos

Regulatory demands added an additional layer of complexity to an already challenging landscape. The exhaustive testing and documentation required by regulatory bodies demanded unwavering attention to detail and a commitment to upholding the highest standards of safety and efficacy—a lesson in diligence and perseverance that will resonate with me for years to come. This was all topped off with 1 week sprint cycles with a market that demanded daily feature releases!!

Cultivating Communication and Inclusion

In the face of uncertainty and ambiguity, effective communication emerged as our greatest asset. Leading by example, I tried to prioritized transparency, empathy, and inclusivity, ensuring that every team member felt heard, valued, and aligned with our shared vision. It was daunting and at times I didn’t always have my A game. By fostering a culture of openness and collaboration, we managed to transcend individual barriers and emerged stronger as a cohesive unit.

Embracing Adaptability and Resilience

Perhaps the most profound lesson of all was the importance of adaptability and resilience in the face of adversity. From rapidly evolving customer demands to shifting market dynamics, the ability to pivot, iterate, and innovate became essential to our survival. By embracing change with courage and resilience, we transformed challenges into opportunities and propelled our project forward against all odds. At times we literally willed new features and releases to market.?

Tying Vision to Actions

It became evident that anchoring our efforts to the overarching mission and vision, rather than caving to the demands of being a mere feature factory, was essential for sustained progress. Aligning every task and decision with our core purpose helped us stay focused, motivated, and cohesive amidst the chaos of daily challenges.?Unfortunately, we did have to feature factory often but the biggest wins were the things we released that were tied solid discovery and clearly defined outcomes.

Over communication and Collaboration

Ensuring that no one felt left behind, ignored, or excluded became paramount. We learned that constant over communication and collaboration—going beyond the superficial to truly involve every team member—were the cornerstones of our success. By fostering an environment where everyone's voice was not just heard but valued, we unlocked the full potential of our collective intelligence and creativity. When you're not sleeping more than 4-6 hours a week you must double down on this approach or you'll go mad!

Managing Stress and Remaining Focused

Amidst the chaos, I learned the importance of managing stress and maintaining focus on what truly matters. There were moments when the pressure of meeting customer demands clouded my approach, but I realized that letting stress and uncontrollable factors dictate my actions too much only hindered our progress. By trying to stay grounded, prioritizing effectively, and trusting in our team's capabilities, we navigated through turbulent waters with clarity and determination.?

As I reflect on the highs and lows of our journey, I'm reminded of the incredible resilience and dedication of every individual who contributed to our shared success. Together, we not only launched a COVID-19 rapid test into the market at scale but also forged lasting bonds and invaluable lessons that will shape our lives forever.?

Massive thank you to each and every one of? my former teammates and colleagues who gave their all as well as?put up with my idiosyncrasies!?
