Lessons Learned from My Social Impact Internship

INTRODUCTION:

I'm v sai bhargav, a first-year CSE student at K L University. I recently completed a social internship with KLGLUG and Swecha AP, which was an incredible experience.

REGISTERING FOR THE INTERNSHIP:

After my exams, I had the option to do a social internship on-campus or from home. I chose to do it from home. But then I got an email from KLGLUG about their internship, which was approved by my university and offered more activities. So, I registered for the KLGLUG internship.

MY INTERNSHIP JOURNEY:

I had daily online meetings from 6 PM to 7 PM to discuss my progress and doubts. I worked on various projects, including OpenStreetMap (OSM), Wiki contributions, and Balaswecha initiatives.

OPENSTREETMAP (OSM) CONTRIBUTIONS:

One of the most significant aspects of my internship was my work on OpenStreetMap. I utilized various tools, including the OSM website, Every Door app, and Mapillary app, to contribute to the platform. I formally marked buildings, areas, and other features in OSM and Every Door. Mapillary, with its street view feature, was a unique experience. Through this journey, I successfully mapped over 50 buildings, roads, government buildings, government schools, and other features in my village on OSM. With the guidance of my KLGLUG mentors, I also used the Every Door app to map temples, shops, and other points of interest in my village.

in that funny incident when i using mapillary app my sister helped to me he sat at front at scooty he shooted all photos nearly 17 miles my sister enjoyed so lot she think that is a game but it is a mapillary work

WIKIPEDIA CONTRIBUTIONS: I also made notable contributions to Wikipedia. With my mother help, I:

• Took photos of government buildings and temples in my village
• Uploaded them to Wikimedia Commons in both Telugu and English languages

It was a unique experience, as many villagers were curious about my activities and I had to explain my social internship project with KLGLUG

BALA SWECHA ACTIVITY:

Exciting Day as a Guest Teacher for 7th Graders\

I had the great pleasure of teaching the basics of computers to a lovely group of 7th-grade students. Interacting with young minds and imparting knowledge on such an important skill was truly gratifying. Their curiosity and eagerness brought back the realization of the value of education and the excitement of learning throughout life.

They were eager to learn and so friendly, which made it really memorable for me. I'm thankful to the school principal for the opportunity. I conducted some quizzes regarding my sessions about computers. And they want some more new things to learn from me. This is most and best activity in this social internship journey. By this activity, I improved my teaching skills. The students were amazing, and even the principal attended my sessions and gave me an appreciation?letter.

We covered computer hardware, software, and a touch of simple programming. They were very cooperative to me, and they were eager to learn about computer. As I have taken 3 days of classes for them about Computer. I'm thankful to the school principal for accepting my request. I'm grateful for the experience. It's inspired me to continue supporting education and advocating for equal opportunities for all students. These days with students gave me beautiful memories.Thank you for SwechaAp

• Mapping Skills: Learned how to contribute to and edit open-source maps. Improved understanding of geographical features and mapping conventions.

Data Collection

I acquired skills in:Collecting and recording local data effectively.Conducting surveys and collecting relevant data using various methods

I enhanced my ability to:Teach and explain technical concepts to students.Communicate effectively through interactions with students

Participating in this social internship has been a pivotal experience in my academic and personal growth. It has inspired me to continue contributing to open-source projects, promoting digital literacy, and engaging with younger audiences to foster a passion for technology.
