Lessons Learned From Avoiding Movie Spoilers

Exactly one year ago today I took my son to see "Avengers: Endgame" on opening weekend.

It was a big deal for us since we're into superhero movies and eagerly go to see all of them, plus this one was the climax of 10 years of MCU movies building up to it.

Before "Endgame" was released, I was determined not to consume any spoilers. I learned my lesson during opening weekend for previous big releases, since there are always a few jerks trying to be controversial by posting spoilers on Facebook two minutes after they get out of the theatre on the first showing.

So I committed to stay off Facebook for most of that weekend. If I had to post something, or answer messages, I was in and out faster than a speeding bullet.

My plan worked: I was able to avoid any spoilers, we enjoyed the movie, and I was in a better mood by not taking in the constant drama that happens on social media every day.

(Sure enough, after watching the movie and ending my social media exile I saw a few Facebook friends had posted; "Wow, I can't believe that _______ died in Avengers: Endgame ... crazy!" but by then it was too late to ruin my experience)

One year later, I'm finding myself employing this same strategy and not spending too much time on social media ...

Now it isn't about heroes in tights fighting supervillains - it's because of COVID arguments.

On Friday, a quick scroll of my newsfeed showed it was mostly filled with posts about whether Donald Trump suggested that bleach was a cure for COVID, and I wonder how much time (both sides) wasted on that debate.

Instead of killing my time and energy thinking about Lysol, I decided to finish reading a book and get a lot of writing done for my business.

As my head hit the pillow Friday night, I was happy that I made that choice.
